Initial speculation, including that of UFC announcer John Gooden during the broadcast, was that Haqparast was afflicted by conjunctivitis, better known as “pink eye.”
As it turns out, Haqparast’s condition could have been even more serious than that. The German-Afghan fighter offered an update Monday following a visit to the doctor, revealing that the infection could have spread to the brain had it not been treated.
“Just out of the doctor,” Haqparast wrote on Twitter. “It’s not a pink eye, it’s a dangerous infection which can go up to my brain and the virus could infect the brain. Back soon.”
While Haqparast vs. Narimani was canceled just hours before UFC Fight Night 127, the Kings MMA product revealed that he had received his purse even though he did not compete. Haqparast saw an eight-fight winning streak come to an end in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 118, where he lost a decision to Marcin Held.
