Alan Jouban was left infuriated with the referees scoring after his split decision loss to Dwight Grant at UFC 236, believing he had done enough in the fight to win.

The judges scored the fight 29-28, 27-30, 29-28 for Grant and Jouban was visibly shocked when announcer Bruce Buffer read out the scoring. Jouban continued to express his frustration backstage, telling ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that he was hugely disappointed with the scoring and that he “wanted an explanation” as to why the referees scored the fight the way they did. The 37-year-old also questioned the judges’ martial arts backgrounds, or lack thereof, as a possible answer as to why they scored it the way they did.

While both fighters didn’t land many significant strikes, Jouban felt he should have been given the nod as he was the one pressing the action the entire fight.

“He backpedaled for 15 minutes,” a livid Jouban said. “I don’t see how you scored 28-29 to him, and another judge sees it 30-27.”

Jouban stressed that the decision affects him financially both in the short term and the long term. “They just took half of my freaking money,” he said. “They just took my renegotiation leverage; they just took the win that I deserved in the Octagon.”
