Pereira’s prediction for the
UFC Baku main event certainly holds some weight.
Pereira’s former foes, Khalil Rountree Jr. (13-6) and Jamahal Hill (12-3), will headline UFC on ABC 8 on Saturday at the Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. Having beaten them both, Pereira can certainly have a say in how the fight might play out. While Pereira acknowledges both as well-rounded fighters, he expects Rountree to have an advantage, judging by his own fight against “The War Horse.”
“They’re both great fighters and well-rounded,” Pereira said in an interview with the UFC. “I fought them both, so I can say something more accurate. They’re both dangerous. But I think, by my fight against Khalil, I see him having some advantage over Jamahal. That’s my opinion.”
Pereira made his first light heavyweight title defense against Hill at UFC 300 last year. Pereira slept Hill in the opening stanza, moments after stopping referee Herb Dean from intervening after “Sweet Dreams” landed a low blow. Hill later accused Pereira of capitalizing on the confusion to close the distance for the knockout sequence.
Meanwhile, Pereira’s last successful title defense was against Rountree at UFC 307. Rountree displayed immense heart in trying to stand with Pereira on the way to a fourth-round stoppage loss. “Poatan” has since lost his title to Magomed Ankalaev via unanimous decision at UFC 313 in March.
While Rountree hasn’t fought since his loss to Pereira, Hil has since suffered another stoppage loss against Jiri Prochazka at UFC 311 this past January.
