Alex Perez has announced on social media he has withdrawn from his flyweight fight against Sergio Pettis at UFC Mexico City on Sept. 21.

“I’m so heartbroken to announce that I have to pull out of my fight in September,” he wrote. “Due to an injury. This was a hard decision but can’t risk injuring myself more. I want to apologize to everyone friends family and all my sponsors! Thanks for the support, I’ll be back better than ever! Sponsor if you need money back please send me a DM so I can send it back to you.”

Perez was coming off of a decision win over Mark De La Rosa at UFC on ESPN 2 in March. Before that, he lost by TKO to Joseph Benavidez at “The Ultimate Fighter 28” finale. The 27-year-old is currently 4-1 inside the Octagon.

Pettis, meanwhile, is riding a two-fight losing streak after losing to Jussier Formiga at UFC 229 and then to Rob Font at UFC on Fox 31 in his bantamweight debut. The 26-year-old was set to return to the flyweight division, but sources tell Sherdog.com that the UFC is searching for a replacement for Perez so Pettis can remain on the card.
