Eddie Alvarez and Josh Neer will meet in a non-title bout for Bellator Fighting Championships in May, the promotion announced via its Twitter account Tuesday. A specific date and venue for the event has not been announced.

A Bellator representative said a weight for the bout has not yet been determined. Both Alvarez and Neer have fought in the lightweight and welterweight divisions in the past.

The 26-year-old Alvarez was crowned the promotion’s lightweight champion with three tournament victories against Greg Loughran, Eric Reynolds and Toby Imada in 2009. Alvarez, a Dream grand prix semi-finalist in 2008, stopped Katsunori Kikuno with an arm-triangle choke at Dream 12 last October.

In January, Alvarez underwent surgery for a torn meniscus and made a speedy recovery.

Neer dropped a unanimous decision to Gleison Tibau at UFC 104 last October, but rebounded with back-to-back first-round wins over Matt Delanoit and Anselmo Martinez in early 2010.

Bellator will debut its second season on April 8 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., and will follow up at the same venue on June 10.

The fledgling promotion will host featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, and middleweight single-elimination tournaments over 12 weeks during its second season.

Bellator’s second season will broadcast live on FOX Sports Net on Thursday nights (check local listings for times). The promotion will also air on Telemundo with a weekly one-hour highlights show and a half-hour version on NBC as part of its Saturday late-night line-up.
