Angela
Magana is in a coma following neurological surgery on Tuesday
morning.
The 35-year-old fighter, who lives in Puerto Rico, posted on her Facebook and Twitter pages early Tuesday that she was going into surgery.
That evening, a member of her coaching staff posted an update from her account, stating that she was unresponsive and in a coma.
Another update via Twitter around 2:30 a.m. local time stated that Magana was still unresponsive but being “worked on” by the neuro team.
While the cause of the surgery was not immediately known -- Magana did not specify in her original tweet -- her team explained Tuesday night that she had suffered complications from a nerve block procedure that she had undergone in order to treat a herniated disc. The complication, known as cauda equina syndrome, is considered a medical emergency and necessitated Tuesday’s surgery.
Magana (11-10) is best-known to mixed martial arts fans for her three-fight stint in the UFC from 2014 to 2017, as well as for her controversial and sometimes brash demeanor. While Magana had been in a competitive slide of late, losing her last six bouts, she signed a new deal with Combate Americas in February and claimed to feel energized about her career, and physically healthy, in a way she had not been in years. Magana had been scheduled to fight Kyra Batara at Combate 36 on April 26.
