Bantamweight Tyson Nam Signs with WSOF, Draws Winner of Miguel Torres-Marlon Moraes

Bantamweight free agent Tyson Nam has signed a multi-fight deal with the World Series of Fighting and will make his promotional debut against the winner of Miguel Torres’ Nov. 3 clash with Marlon Moraes.

Sherdog.com confirmed the news with a source close to the Las Vegas-based promotion on Thursday following an initial report from MMAFighting.com. The WSOF’s November debut takes place at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino and airs live on NBC Sports Network.

A former Bellator Fighting Championships signee, Nam was released by the promotion this summer without having competed in Bellator’s circular cage. The Oregonian then made waves by knocking out Eduardo Dantas, Bellator’s reigning bantamweight champion, at Shooto Brazil 33 on Aug. 25.

Nam’s management then began fielding new offers from various promotions, including the WSOF and the UFC. Bellator invoked its right-to-match contract clause, which states that the promotion may match any offer made to a released fighter within a certain time after being cut. According to sources close to the situation, Bellator matched the WSOF’s initial offer to Nam but then ultimately declined to match a second, more lucrative offer.

Representing Sports Lab in Portland, Ore., Nam enters the WSOF fold on the strength of a four-fight winning streak. The 28-year-old began his pro career in the Hawaii-based Icon Sport promotion before completing a one-fight stint with EliteXC. Nam would go on to compete for King of the Cage and Matt Lindland’s Sport Fight organization in Oregon, racking up half of his career victories by knockout. The bantamweight competed four times last year, closing out 2011 with wins over Chanti Johnson (twice) and Chuck Jordan before stopping Dantas in his lone outing of 2012.
