Guillermo Martinez Ayme vs. Will Florentino

Round 1

The taller Florentino sets up on the outside and looks to keep Martinez out of striking range with long jabs and push kicks. Florentino mixes in a couple outside leg kicks before Martinez closes the gap and shoves him against the fence with double underhooks. Florentino stays busy with foot stomps until Martinez releases him midway through the round. When Florentino next comes in to strike, Martinez grabs hold and trips him to the mat. Martinez only stays on top a few seconds before standing and allowing Florentino to do the same. Martinez slips out of the way of a leg kick, dips back into the pocket and slugs Florentino with an overhand right. Another whipping right hand lands for Martinez just before the bell.

Florentino slipped by Ayme.
Both men land jabs early in round two, and Martinez once again ducks inside to deliver a head-down overhand right. Florentino is controlling the center of the cage but not really letting his hands go as Martinez moves around the outside, and Martinez is doing well to evade the taller man’s leg kicks. Two minutes in, Florentino lands a hard outside thigh kick. Referee Don Turnage tells the fighters to get busy as they continue to feint and bob in the middle of the cage. Florentino switches to southpaw stance, tags Martinez with a left hook and a slapping leg kick.

With one minute left, Martinez initiates another clinch on the cage. Florentino turns him around, but Martinez again puts him on the ground with a suplex. Florentino stands back up, sporting a cut on the outside of his right eye as he returns to his corner.

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Martinez

Round 3

Martinez starts the final round with another overhand right and then goes back to circling the outside, making Florentino chase after him. Florentino connects with a left hook and closes the distance to hit Martinez with an outside leg kick. Not much action through the first half of the round, and when the welterweights do start throwing hands again, neither lands much. Florentino lands a leg kick, tries to step in with a left hook and misses; Martinez whiffs on a counter right hand. With 80 seconds left, Martinez changes levels for a single-leg, can’t get it and instead shoves Florentino to the cage. Another throw puts Florentino on the ground, but again Martinez allows him to stand.

Steve Garcia vs. Cody Walker

Round 1

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Garcia's knockout was brutal.
Walker lands a straight right hand counter to a low kick and follows up with a left hook that puts Garcia on his back foot. Garcia is wobbled, circling with his back to the fence as Walker charges after him with more big punches. Garcia steps to the center of the cage and seems to have regained his footing now. Walker takes a kick to the body and tries to catch Garcia’s leg, but Garcia swings a hard, short left hook that lands right on the button. Walker crashes to the ground, already unconscious, and Garcia tacks on a couple more hammer fists before referee Kerry Hatley intervenes.

The Official Result

Steve Garcia def. Cody Walker via KO (Punch) R1 0:39

Robert McDaniel vs. Matt Jones

Round 1

Jones counters a left high kick with a short right hand that sends McDaniel shooting for a takedown. Jones stuffs the shot and pushes McDaniel against the cage when he comes back up. McDaniel sends a couple knees up the center before reversing the position, and then he lands a couple more. The fighters separate and meet in the center, where Jones connects with a hard body shot and McDaniel goes shooting again. They wind up back on the fence, McDaniel on the outside, working more knees in the clinch. Jones tries to escape, can’t and eats a left hand inside. Jones finally gets out with 90 seconds on the clock. McDaniel puts a good straight left-right hook combo on Jones in the middle of the cage, follows up with a hard leg kick and connects with a straight left. Jones finishes the round shooting a single-leg against the fence.

Round 2

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

McDaniel absolutely dominated Jones.
McDaniel steps into the pocket with a two-punch combo and dips out before Jones can land any return fire. A hard high kick thuds off Jones’ arm, and now Jones pushes McDaniel against the fence. Jones changes levels and hits a double-leg, but McDaniel sits up against the cage and immediately threatens with a kimura. With Jones forced to defend, McDaniel drives forward and rushes him to the canvas, landing a couple good punches upstairs before Jones can free his trapped arm. Halfway through the round, it’s McDaniel in half guard on Jones’ left side, passing to side control after about 40 seconds.

Jones gives up his back and McDaniel slaps on a rear-naked choke. It’s not quite under the chin, and Jones gets out of trouble as he ditches his mouthguard out and rolls to his back. McDaniel finishes the round back in half guard, dropping hands on Jones’ now bloodied face.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 McDaniel

Round 3

Jones tries to get inside on the taller McDaniel and takes a hard kick to the body. McDaniel connects with a jumping knee and tries to catch the leaning Jones in a guillotine, but he quickly abandons the choke and resets to resume striking. McDaniel lands a turning kick to the body, a left hook upstairs and then one to the body. More body shots connect for McDaniel, then body kicks, and he takes down Jones with a double-leg on the fence. Jones stands up quickly but takes a knee to the chest in the process. McDaniel keeps his opponent at bay with a couple side kicks to the body. Jones eats a step-in knee but counters with a good overhand left. McDaniel keeps trying to land flashy spinning kicks late in the round, but they’re telegraphed and Jones is able to dodge them.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 McDaniel (30-27 McDaniel)

The Official Result

Bubba McDaniel def. Matt Jones via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) R3 5:00

Jamelle Jones vs. Ray Sloan

Round 1

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Sloan easily dispatched of Jones.
Jones backs up the oncoming Sloan with an overhand left and then lands another a few seconds later. Sloan keeps coming and counters a missed combination with a precise right hand that puts Jones on the canvas. Sloan pounces and moves from side control to back mount in a flash, staying attached as Jones stands up. Sloan has a deep rear-naked choke locked up, and Jones taps out just as it looks like he’s about to fall unconscious.

The Official Result

Ray Sloan def. Jamelle Jones via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 0:48

Rodney Wallace vs. Kelly Anundson

Round 1

Anundson sticks a long right hand and an outside leg kick as the stocky 205ers circle in the center of the cage. He dumps Wallace to the ground with a single-leg and immediately moves to side control. Wallace reclaims half guard as Anundson leans left to right, trying to find some space to strike. Wallace is keeping Anundson wrapped up tight, but “Crossface” finds enough room to land some short body shots. Halfway through the round, Anundson steps over to full mount, but Wallace shoves him right off and scrambles up. Another takedown goes for Anundson, and he’s right back in half guard. Wallace traps him there again, and Anundson finishes the round dropping short punches from on top.

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Anundson

Round 2

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Anundson bested Wallace.
Anundson dives on a single-leg and puts Wallace on the ground just 15 seconds into the round. Wallace tries to flip him over the top and the light heavyweights go back to their feet, where Anundson pulls guard for a guillotine choke attempt. Wallace pulls his head free but gets swept underneath seconds later. Backing up to the fence, Wallace is able to stand; Anundson takes him back down seconds later. Anundson stifles an armbar attempt and now tries to take the back of his kneeling opponent, but Wallace’s right side is flush to the fence, blocking the back mount.

Wallace turns over, putting his back to the mat, and now Anundson passes to side control on the left. Anundson traps Wallace’s right arm and punches under his left armpit, looking to soften him up for a rear-naked choke. Wallace is in a bad spot, bleeding from his nose as Anundson continues to land a steady stream of ground-and-pound to the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Anundson

Round 3

Wallace is ready for Anundson’s single-leg and manages to stay standing with the help of the fence and some good balance. Anundson keeps after the takedown attempt and puts Wallace on the ground, albeit briefly. Wallace stands, tries a kimura and gets spun back down. Back up comes Wallace, and now he stuffs a sloppy toss from Anundson to wind up in top position. It’s half guard for Wallace, leaning right to left across Anundson’s body and trying to extract his other leg. As Wallace frames up a lock on Anundson’s arm, Anundson flips him over the top. Wallace nearly gets a back-mounted crucifix, then tries for a rear-naked choke. Anundson defends but allows Wallace to step over into full mount. Wallace peels off to try a belly-down armbar, and Anundson pulls his arm free almost instantly. With 1:45 on the clock, Anundson is back on top in side control, shoving Wallace toward the fence. Wallace sits up against the cage and Anundson peppers him with short left hands. Wallace gets to his knees, then back to his feet, but Anundson stays glued to him and finishes the round on the UFC vet’s back.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Anundson (30-27 Anundson)

The Official Result

Kelly Anundson def. Rodney Wallace via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) R3 5:00

Cortez Coleman vs. Joe Vedepo

Round 1

Coleman strikes first with a snappy jab and then defends as Vedepo shoots for a takedown against the fence. Coleman lands a quick right hand to the body and turns Vedepo around to take the outside. The middleweights pummel for position until Coleman connects with a combination that sends Vedepo backpedaling. Coleman chases “The Doctor” to the other side of the cage, throwing bombs, but Vedepo covers up and circles out to reset. Vedepo comes at Coleman with a nice left hook, answered in kind by “The Crazy Cowboy.” Coleman is getting backed up now, and Vedepo catches him throwing a low kick to plow Coleman to the ground in the center of the cage. Vedepo looks to be trying for a forearm choke but he abandons it to throw elbows as he steps into full mount. Coleman slips out the back door and scrambles up, then tags Vedepo with more heavy punches. Vedepo moves backward until the assault subsides and then locks up Coleman in a Thai clinch on the fence. Both men land knees to the body and finish the round throwing hands on the fence. After the round, Coleman is warned by referee Jason Herzog, who says Coleman landed an accidental groin strike and eye poke during the round.

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Coleman

Round 2

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Vedepo took a majority decision from Coleman.
Seconds into the round, Vedepo lands an accidental low kick to the groin of Coleman, who takes a minute to recover. When they resume, Vedepo connects with a right hook and then plows Coleman to the mat with a double-leg. Coleman grabs a guillotine as he’s taken down, and the choke looks deep, but Vedepo stacks up and pulls his head free. Just after escaping the submission, Vedepo takes full mount and drops a half dozen hard punches, but Coleman gets under the leg and sweeps Vedepo underneath just as quickly.

Coleman stays active on top with body shots while Vedepo tries to wrap him up from half guard. Coleman passes to side control with just under two minutes remaining in the round. Vedepo gets to his knees, turns around and shoves Coleman to the ground. Again, Coleman attempts a guillotine as he falls to his back, and again Vedepo defends the choke to take full mount. It looks like Vedepo will finish the round on top, dropping short elbows on Coleman’s face, but Coleman slips out to get back on top just before the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Coleman

Round 3

Vedepo shoots a wide double-leg against the fence, and Coleman pulls guard with yet another guillotine attempt. This one looks to be the loosest of the bunch, and Vedepo escapes quickly to posture up in half guard. Vedepo lands a couple body shots before Coleman once again slips out from full mount. Vedepo gets another quick takedown and now frames up an arm-triangle choke. The cage is blocking his pass on Coleman’s left side, so Vedepo settles for full mount. Coleman turns over and gets to his knees, then slips out the back door when Vedepo tries for back mount. Now it’s Coleman on top with just over two minutes left in the fight, trying to get something going as Vedepo ties him up from half guard. Coleman passes to side control just as Vedepo gets to his knees. Coleman stands and controls the head of the kneeling Vedepo, and referee Herzog warns Coleman not to knee his head. Coleman throws the knee anyway, and Herzog takes one point for the infraction. Luckily, Vedepo isn’t too badly hurt from the foul and soon gets back to action, charging at Coleman with wild combinations. Vedepo changes levels and gets another takedown with 30 seconds to go, finishing the fight punching from Coleman’s open guard.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Vedepo (28-28 Draw)

The Official Result

Joe Vedepo def. Cortez Coleman via Majority Decision (29-27, 29-27, 28-28) R3 5:00

Opening Round: Light Heavyweight Tournament
Carlos Eduardo vs. Egidijus Valavicius

Round 1

Valavicius chops at the outside of Eduardo’s lead leg with a couple hard low kicks. The Brazilian waits 30 seconds before exploding forward and driving Valavicius to the ground near the base of the fence. Valavicius is quick to stand, but Eduardo stays stuck to his back. Valavicius is warned for grabbing the cage before rolling forward to grab for a kneebar. Eduardo thwarts the submission attempt and takes half guard, where he sits up to drop hard punches to the Lithuanian’s body and head. Valavicius tries to elevate Eduardo with butterfly hooks, but “Cachorrao” uses the extra space to capture his turning opponent’s back. Valavicius rolls over and now Eduardo is in full mount, unloading with a barrage of heavy punches which are mostly blocked. Valavicius turns as if surrendering his back, then waits until Eduardo is off balance and throws him off to take top position. Eduardo is active underneath, shifting his hips and creeping his legs up as Valavicius pounds his body with punches. With 30 seconds left, Valavicius stands up and referee Jason Herzog orders Eduardo to do the same. Both men finish the round throwing punches but only land grazing shots.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Eduardo

Round 2

The light heavyweights begin round two throwing right hands, and then both switch to leg kicks. When Valavicius throws his kick, Eduardo grabs hold and runs him to the ground. They scramble back up and resume boxing, where Valavicius is able to stick a couple good left hands and defend a takedown attempt. As the fighters separate, referee Herzog issues another warning to Valavicius for grabbing the fence. Eduardo comes forward with a right hook to the body and left hand up top. As Valavicius steps into punching range, Eduardo drops levels and explodes for a speedy takedown near the fence. Valavicius hits a butterfly sweep and gets back to his feet. Eduardo is slow to stand but quick to land a right cross as he steps into range. Valavicius comes back with a left hook-right straight combination that knocks Eduardo backward. Both guys land left hooks in an exchange, and Valavicius catches Eduardo with a knee as the Brazilian drops for a double-leg shot. Valavicius gets the better of a close punching exchange late in the round, but he comes away bleeding due to an accidental clash of heads.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Valavicius

Round 3

Valavicius is on the march early in the final round, walking down Eduardo with heavy punching combinations despite the stream of blood leaking very close to his right eye. The Lithuanian stuffs two takedown attempts and pushes Eduardo backward with some long jabs and hard low kicks. Eduard is on his back foot through the entire first half of the round, with Valavicius constantly pushing forward to strike. Valavicius lands a good knee in the Thai plum, then a left hand behind it, but he opts for conserving his energy over trying to blitz Eduardo for the finish. Valavicius snaps back Eduardo’s head with a Superman punch, double-pumps his jab and then stuffs a shot. Eduardo flops to his guard, inviting Valavicius to join him on the ground, but Valavicius just kicks at the Brazilian’s legs until ref Herzog orders him up. Valavicius is still pushing forward at the bell, hitting Eduardo with one last flying knee to the body at the end of the bout.

Sherdog Scores

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Valavicius (29-28 Valavicius)

The Official Result

Egidijus Valavicius def. Carlos Eduardo via Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) R3 5:00

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Terry Davinney

Round 1

Davinney comes forward swinging his left hook and gets front-kicked back out of range. When Davinney changes levels for a shot, Sokoudjou lands a borderline legal knee which referee Rob Hinds does not call a foul. With Davinney still clung to his left leg, Sokoudjou sprawls and lands elbows to the head, then stands up with his back to the fence. Davinney elevates and slams Sokoudjou, landing in the closed guard of “The African Assassin.” Referee Hinds warns Sokoudjou to mind the back of Davinney’s head as the Team Quest fighter throws strikes from underneath. Halfway through the round, Sokoudjou hooks Davinney’s leg and sweeps to top position, where he goes from side control to half guard. Big punches land for Sokoudjou, a series of unanswered lefts prompting the ref to tell Davinney to defend himself. Sokoudjou takes full mount with 90 seconds left and unloads with both hands, causing Davinney to turn to his belly. Sokoudjou secures the back and applies a deep rear-naked choke, and Davinney is forced to tap out.

The Official Result

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou def. Terry Davinney via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 4:16

Eric Prindle vs. James Thompson

Round 1

There’s no touch of gloves between the heavyweights as Thompson comes straight ahead, shooting for a takedown. Prindle lands a couple knees from the Thai plum but succumbs to the double-leg near the base of the fence. Prindle is warned by referee Rob Hinds for grabbing the fence and then drops back to try a heel hook. Thompson pulls his leg free and comes back to the ground, where he sets up in side control on Prindle’s left. Thompson receives a pair of warning from ref Hinds for punching the back of Prindle’s head, so “The Colossus” switches to drilling Prindle’s body with knees. Prindle goes fetal, and Thompson drops eight or nine big left hands before the referee intervenes.

The Official Result

James Thompson def. Eric Prindle via TKO (Punches) R1 1:55

Opening Round: Light Heavyweight Tournament
Austen Heidlage vs. Luiz Philipe Lins

Round 1

Heidlage misses as he snaps a quick teep kick up the center. After sidestepping a couple combinations from the American, Lins gets through with a hard right hand on the back end of a combination. Lins wraps up Heidlage and trips him to the ground, where the Brazilian immediately takes back-mount. Lins locks up a body triangle and stays attached as Heidlage stands up to lean against the fence. Heidlage is controlling Lins’ hands, making it tough for Lins to do anything from the advantageous position. Lins gets his hands free and throws a couple punches, trying to find an angle for the rear-naked choke. He snakes his right arm under Heidlage’s chin, and Heidlage taps out to the RNC just as he goes unconscious and slumps to the ground.

The Official Result

Luiz Philipe Lins def. Austen Heidlage via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 2:45
