A number of the main players from Bellator 142 “Dynamite” could be facing extensive layoffs.
Bellator 142 took place at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., this past Saturday and saw McGeary submit Ortiz with a reverse triangle to retain his light heavyweight crown in the evening’s headliner. McGeary must be cleared by a doctor for a left medial collateral leg strain or face 180 days on the shelf. Ortiz, meanwhile, could be out for six months unless he is cleared by a doctor for neck pain.
The card also featured a four-man light heavyweight tournament, which Phil Davis won to earn an eventual shot at McGeary’s title. “Mr. Wonderful” emerged with only a mandatory seven-day suspensions, but Lawal, who was unable to continue after defeating Linton Vassell due to a rib injury a semifinal bout, could be out for six months due to a possible right rib fracture. Newton must also be cleared for a possible rib cage fracture following his loss to Davis.
Finally, Thomson cruised to a third round-submission of Mike Bronzoulis is a featured lightweight clash, but “The Punk” needs to have an MRI or x-ray clearance for hip pain suffered as a result of that contest.
