Bellator Featherweight Prospect Aaron Pico Won’t Fight Teammate A.J. McKee

Aaron Pico and A.J. McKee have a few things in common.

Both are top prospects in Bellator MMA’s featherweight division; both are coming off monumental knockout victories and both train at Team Bodyshop under McKee’s father, Antonio McKee.

The heavily-hyped Pico won his fourth consecutive fight at Bellator 206, stopping former Legacy Fighting Alliance champion and 23-fight veteran Leandro Higo via first-round technical knockout at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday night. Pico was dominant against Higo, who recently came up short in a bid for the Bellator bantamweight title against Darrion Caldwell.

That victory would seemingly accelerate Pico’s timeline in the promotion, as he has been exceedingly impressive in each fight since suffering a shocking upset loss in his Bellator debut.

“My whole job is just to progress as a fighter,” Pico said at the Bellator 206 post-fight press conference. “That’s so important to me right now. I’m very young in my career. I have a lot of things to work on. Being the best fighter doesn’t happen overnight. It takes many years. But all I can do is progress and take each fight as it comes.”

Pico shares gym space at Team Bodyshop with McKee, an impressive product in his own right who has compiled a 12-0 mark under the Bellator banner. McKee earned a signature victory one event prior, knocking out John Teixeira da Conceicao in 69 seconds at Bellator 205.

While both Pico and McKee are on a similar trajectory, don’t expect to see them square off in the Bellator cage. Pico is aware that the subject will continue to come up as long as both continue to be successful.

“His dad’s my coach,” Pico said of McKee. “But that’s just something we’re going to have to talk about as a team, and that’s for another topic. For right now, I’m just focused on my win and we’ll talk about that when the time comes.

“But the bottom line is, his dad’s my coach. We’re training partners. So it’s just not going to happen. Yeah, that’s a question that people are probably going to ask, but that’s something we’ll discuss face-to-face and figure it out.”
