Bellator President Scott Coker Willing to do Champion-versus-Champion with Rizin

During a pre-fight press conference for Bellator 208 on Saturday in New York, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker talked about his passion for the sport, as a fan and as a martial artist. In the past, he has put together mixed kickboxing and MMA events, and partnering with DAZN has only fueled his desire to bring the best fights to fans.

Coker reiterated plans to bring Bellator to Japan and revealed his willingness to consider champion-versus-champion superfights with Rizin Fighting Federation. Moreover, he made specific mention of his desire to see Bellator bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell face Rizin bantamweight titleholder Kyoji Horiguchi. Because of DAZN’s popularity in Japan and his relationship with Rizin Chairman Nobuyuki Sakakibara, Coker believes it could happen as soon as 2019.

DAZN continues to add other MMA promotions to its programming and could create a Dynamite-type event in conjunction with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. Coker also showed interest in staging submission-only events inside the Bellator cage, but nothing has been set in stone. The Bellator heavyweight and welterweight tournaments have produced positive numbers for the company, and Coker affirmed that more tournaments are forthcoming.
