Boxing: Manny Pacquiao Throttles Adrien Broner, Retains WBA Welterweight Title
Manny Pacquiao once again turned in a stellar performance as he
dominated Adrien Broner Saturday night in retaining his WBA
welterweight title.
Pacquiao didn’t look like a 40-year-old fighter inside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as he did anything he wanted to Broner but stop him. The Filipino mega star used a superb right jab to set up his lethal straight left throughout the bout and he dug to Broner’s body repeatedly in every round. Broner was never able to get things going offensively and when he was cracked by clean punches, “The Problem” got on his proverbial bike.
Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs) hurt Broner with a combo of punches to
the head in the seventh and had him reeling against the ropes.
Broner covered up and retreated, only to be buzzed again by
follow-up punches. The Cincinnati native recovered and had a decent
8th, but he was nearly dropped by a scorching left to the jaw in
the next frame. From that point forward, though, Broner (33-4-1, 24
KOs) rarely engaged and opted to shy away from “Pac Man” until the
final bell.
At the conclusion of the pay-per-view bout, all three judges heavily favored Pacquiao; they had it 117-111 and 116-112 (twice). Sherdog.com saw it 118-110 for Pacquiao, who indicated that he wants to fight Floy Mayweather Jr. next or the winner of the upcoming Mikey Garcia-Errol Spence Jr. bout.
Broner screamed afterward about he felt he was robbed, likely the only person in the world who thinks that.
