Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Danny Jacobs

Round 1

Tony Weeks is the referee for this WBC/WBA/IBF middleweight world championship bout. Round one begins with both men sizing each other up in the center of the ring. Canelo with a jab and a left hook, though his hook misses. Jacobs goes to the body with the left after a jab. A double jab by Jacobs, followed by a right to the body, but Canelo counters with a right to the face. Jacobs is using his jab to the body at a decent pace. Canelo is pressing the action, but neither man has thrown a lot of punches. Canelo wins the first 10-9.

Round 2

Canelo lands a crisp jab through the guard early. Jacobs continues to back away as Alvarez follows him. The crowd is starting to chant “Canelo, Canelo” and the Mexican tosses out a left hook upstairs. A stiff jab by Canelo. Another. Jacobs is very patient, but he’s allowing Alvarez to land left hooks to the body and jabs up top. Canelo lands a right to the head and it seems to have shaken Jacobs, who backs off. The Brooklyn fighter throws a three-punch combo, but Canelo blocks it. They trade pouches at the bell, but Canelo lands a right hook right at the end of the round, though it was a glancing blow. 10-9 Canelo

Round 3

Alvarez is pressing the action early and forcing Jacobs backwards. Alvarez digs a right tot eh body; Jacobs doesn’t like it. Alvarez digs a right to the body, followed by a left hook to the head, but Jacobs shakes it off. “Miracle Man” with a nice one-two upstairs at the midway point, but Canelo shrugs it off. Jacobs digs two lefts to the body. Jacobs with a nice volley of punches at the bell, but nothing lands. Its a very close round, but Canelo’s earlier action was better. 10-9 Canelo

Round 4

Alvarez opens the fourth with a stiff double jab to the face. Jacobs blocks a left hook, but then eats another jab. Jacobs takes another right to the body, but he comes back and tags Canelo with a right to the noggin. A three-punch combo is blocked from Canelo, but his follow-up right to the ribs isn’t. They trade jabs int he center of the ring and then both miss wild uppercuts. Jab-jab-hook from Canelo, but Jacobs shakes them off. Alvarez dips and slips several Jacobs punches and then counters with jabs and a right to the body. 10-9 Canelo

Round 5

Alvarez with some jabs immediately and then slips and ducks away from severe Jacobs punches. Canelo is in a rhythm now and walking Jacobs backwards, tossing out jabs. Jacobs is trying to get his jab going, but Canelo is dipping away from them. Alvarez with a series of jabs and then a right to the head. Jacobs tries to fire back, but his punches miss. Not a ton of action, but Canelo is in control. 10-9 Canelo

Round 6

Jacobs with the jab early and then dodges a massive left hook from the Mexican. Jacobs rattles off four punches, but Canelo avoids them all. Canelo with a series of jabs and then another shot to the ribs. Jacobs swath to southpaw and lands a few jabs, but Canelo is still pressing the issue. The crowd is rather tame at the moment due to the lack of action. Canelo lands a right to the head followed by a hard left uppercut to the chin. Jacobs seems to buckle a tad but shakes it off as the round ends. 10-9 Canelo

Round 7

Canelo comes out firing and backs Jacobs into a corner. He pelts him with punches to the body and head and forces him to tie up. Canelo, likely sensing Jacobs isn’t strong enough, walks him into the ropes and fires away. The Brooklynite avoids the shots and escapes, but he doesn’t return the fire. Canelo with a hard right to the face, but he eats a clean left hook, though it has no effect on him. Jacobs digs a series of thudding punches to the body. They trade lefts to the body with 30 seconds left and then clinch. Alvarez digs a pair of lefts to the body late and then one up top. 10-9 Canelo

Round 8

Canelo fires off his left jab and presses Jacobs into the ropes. A right by the Mexican, followed by a few more jabs. Jacobs tries to answer but his punches are smothered. Alvarez with a left to the liver and then one to the head. Jacobs fires off a pair of jabs but he can’t keep Canelo at bay. Canelo backs into the ropes and allows Jacobs to open up a flurry of punches Canelo counters with a left hook tot eh head and then a volley of punches. A right to the body, followed by a right uppercut and another to the body from Canelo. Jacobs explodes with a flurry of punches right before the bell and it’s just enough to take the round. 10-9 Jacobs.

Round 9

Jacobs turns southpaw to begin the round. Canelo with a few jabs and then a straight right, though it’s a glancing blow. Alvarez with a hard right to the body, but his left upstairs misses. Jacobs fires a left hook that misses as well. Canelo digs a left to the gut. A right to the face hurts Jacobs, who backs away and takes another and then a left to the body. Jacobs fires a big left to the head and backs Canelo off; his best punch of the fight so far. Jacobs with a left to the head and then a right, but Canelo comes back with a left hook to the liver and a right to the beak. 10-9 Canelo

Round 10

Canelo comes right after Jacobs and tosses out a left hook, but Jacobs avoids it. Alvarez digs a right to the body and a left to the head Jacobs comes back to the head and body. A sharp right hook to the jaw from the Mexican and it stiffens Jacobs’ legs for a second; he quickly recovers. Canelo with two to the body and Jacobs comes right back. They exchange punches briefly in the center of the ring. Jacobs backs Canelo into the ropes and digs punches to the body and head. Alvarez might be slowing down a little as Jacobs is very active. Jacobs backs away and Canelo hunts him down, but he’s not landing anything. It’s a great round for Jacobs. 10-9 Jacobs

Round 11

They trade jabs to begin the 11th round. Jacobs needs to go for broke here in the championship rounds because he’s way behind on the cards. Canelo has resumed control early, backing Jacobs up with the jab and left to the body. Hard right to the face snaps Jacobs’ head back. Daniel with a three-punch combo to the body a minute in. Alvarez goes with a lead right, followed by a double jab to the mouth. Canelo keeps tossing out that lead right and it can’t miss. Jacobs comes forward but takes a hard left to the body. Jacobs is busier again and backs Canelo into the ropes. Another lead right to the he’d from Alvarez. Another. Jacobs lands a left and then a right. Its a close round but Canelo landed the cleaner punches. 10-9 Canelo

Round 12

acobs’ corner is telling him he needs to close strongly. Same with Canelo’s corner. Jacobs comes out strongly, tossing punches to the head dead body. Jacobs wings a big hook and misses, and then slips onto his back; its correctly ruled a slip. Jacobs with a triple jab as Canelo comes forward. Canelo takes a hook to the body. Jacobs comes right at him and they trade punches, Canelo lands a shot to the head and body, but Jacobs answers with a triple hook to the guts. With a minute left, Jacobs needs a miracle. Canelo cracks him with an uppercut on the inside. Miracle Man with a triple jab but his follow-up right misses. Jacobs lands a left hook but then takes a left to the body. Jacobs is chasing Canelo and they trade blows. Canelo ties him up at the bell. It’s a strong finish for Jacobs, but it’s not enough to win. I've got it 10-9 Jacobs (116-112 Canelo).
