Champ MacSwain, Challenger ‘Wolverine’ Cleared for Legend 5
Chris Nelson Jul 15, 2011
Six months ago, Rodney
MacSwain became
Legend Fighting Championship’s inaugural welterweight
titleholder by defeating Hoon Kim on
just a few weeks’ notice.
On Saturday, New Zealand’s “Hot Rod” will attempt to defend his belt for the first time against the man he replaced in that bout, South Korean “Wolverine” Myung Ho Bae.
Both champion MacSwain (169.5 pounds) and challenger Bae (170.5)
made weight for their
Legend 5 headliner during Friday’s official weigh-ins at City
of Dreams casino in Macau. The event will air on North American
pay-per-view Saturday at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT).
Legend will also crown its first 135-pound champ Saturday as 20-year-old Nam Jin Jo (135.5) and Chinese wrestling convert Honggang Yao (135.3) square off in the promotion’s bantamweight tournament final. Jo reached the title bout by submitting Indonesian vet Yohan Mulia Legowo at Legend 4. Yao, in his MMA debut, earned a unanimous nod over favored Aussie Michael Mortimer at the same event.
Undercard bouts of note will see former heavyweight prospect Hae Jun Yang (185.5) make his middleweight debut against Gareth Ealey (185.8) -- a short-notice substitution for injured teammate Pat Crawley -- and lightweight title contender Yui Chul Nam (154.6) scrap with Matt Hughes-trained Australian Rob Hill (154.6).
