Chris Weidman Believes He Should Be Next in Line for Title Shot Against Robert Whittaker

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion Chris Weidman was in attendance over the weekend to help promote UFC 221 in Perth, Australia. The former 185-pound king, who is currently sidelined with a thumb injury, took time to answer a few questions in the lead up to the main event.

Weidman was “surprised” to hear Yoel Romero had failed to make weight given that an interim title was at stake. When asked who should fight current UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker next if Romero (who was ineligible to claim interim title after missing his mark on the scale) beat Luke Rockhold, Weidman replied:

“As far as who should fight Whittaker? I dunno. I think I should,” Weidman said.

Weidman (14-3) is coming off an impressive submission victory over the dangerous Kelvin Gastelum in July 2017 and is hoping once he recovers from his thumb injury he can focus on regaining the middleweight belt back which he lost in 2015 to Rockhold.

Weidman also spent time sight-seeing around Australia and was pictured in front of the Sydney Harbor Bridge with legendary Australian kickboxer and boxer John Wayne Parr. Weidman said his teammates back at home in New York are obsessed with Parr and was hopeful of luring him back to The Big Apple to help him train for his next fight.
