Garbrandt recently posted what looked like an announcement of a fight with Dillashaw on his Twitter account, but the matchup was not official at that time. The two former Team Alpha Male Training partners were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 213, but Garbrandt was forced to withdraw from that date due to a back injury.
Garbrandt claimed the 135-pound belt with a five-round decision over Dominick Cruz at UFC 206 this past December. Dillashaw, a former bantamweight titlist, has garnered back-to-back decision triumphs over Raphael Assuncao and John Lineker since losing the belt to Cruz in January 2016.
Meanwhile, three other new bouts were announced for UFC 217: Alexey Oleynik vs. Curtis Blaydes at heavyweight; Corey Anderson vs. Patrick Cummins at light heavyweight and Gadzhimurad Antigulov vs. Ion Cutelaba at 205 pounds. Additionally a pair of previously reported matchups — Johny Hendricks vs. Paulo Henrique Costa at middleweight and Aiemann Zahabi vs. Ricardo Lucas Ramos — were also confirmed.
