Collapsed Lung Knocks Ciryl Gane Out of UFC 249 Match With Shamil Abdurakhimov

Brooklyn, New York, cards for the Ultimate Fighting Championship always seem to suffer from unfortunate withdrawals, as is the case for Ciryl Gane.

On Thursday, Gane posted on social media that he will no longer be competing at UFC 249 in April. He was set to face Shamil Abdurakhimov at heavyweight, but suffered a collapsed lung in training. He has assured everyone that he will recover, but that he will not be able to appear at this event. The promotion has not yet announced a replacement, but Abdurakhimov is expected to remain on the card.

In his post, he wrote: "Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in New York for UFC 249. I was struck by another pneumothorax [collapsed lung] during training. Impossible for me to be at 100% by April 18. Don’t worry, everything is fine! I will take this time off to recover and return at my best!”

Gane burst on to the scene with a spotless 3-0 record on the Canadian TKO MMA promotion to take on Raphael Pessoa at UFC Fight Night 156 in August 2019. After tapping Pessoa in the first, he has since submitted Don'Tale Mayes in October and defeated Tanner Boser on the scorecards in December. The decision with Boser marked the first time that “Bon Gamin” had ever gone the distance in his young career.

Abdurakhimov suffered a knockout loss in his last time out against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 242 in September. The defeat snapped a three-fight win streak where he knocked out Marcin Tybura, beat Andrei Arlovski by unanimous verdict and smashed Chase Sherman.

UFC 249 takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on April 18. The event will be headlined by a much-anticipated lightweight title tilt between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. The co-main attraction sees a strawweight rematch between former champs as Jessica Andrade again faces Rose Namajunas.
