Conor McGregor, Max Holloway Engage in St. Patrick's Day War of Words

Conor McGregor decided to relive some past glories this weekend, and it turned into a sniping session with a former foe turned champion.

In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, McGregor was in attendance at Boston’s TD Garden to provide a pre-game pep talk in the Boston Bruins’ locker room prior to their game and perform the ceremonial puck drop. Back in August 2013, McGregor, in only his second UFC fight, defeated current UFC featherweight Champion Max Holloway in the same building by unanimous decision. McGregor ended up tearing his ACL in the win over the Hawaiian.

The proud Irishman decided to celebrate the day he would relive his success nearly six years ago by bringing up the victory over Holloway in a Twitter post.

“Blessed,” who has amassed an incredible 13 straight wins inside the Octagon since that night, pointed out to McGregor that he fought a 21-year-old that was relatively new to the sport on that night.

McGregor couldn’t help but continue the sparring, pointing out that he had beaten Holloway after injuring himself. Holloway replied with an apparent allusion to a rematch after both men complete their next fights this summer.

Holloway is scheduled to move up a weight class to fight Dustin Poirier at lightweight for the interim 155-pound belt at UFC 236 in April. The belts will be unified at the end of the year with the winner to face currently suspended champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor has only fought once inside the Octagon since he captured the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez in July 2016. McGregor’s last outing was against Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October 2018, where he was largely dominated for four rounds before tapping to a neck crank.
