It seems it is only a matter of time before Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson meet inside the Octagon to determine who is the best Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight. Former champ Conor McGregor, who fought “The Eagle” last year, believes the champ would have too much for “El Cucuy” in a potential fight.

McGregor was manhandled by Nurmagomedov last October at UFC 229, with the champ using his superior wrestling to take the Irishman down before eventually locking in a rear-naked choke in the fourth round.

However, many consider Ferguson to be the biggest test for Nurmagomedov and “The Eagle” agrees that “El Cucuy” should be next in line.

McGregor, who attended a sponsor’s event in Kiev, Ukraine, said if the fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson goes ahead he would tip the champ to maintain his title (via MMAJunkie.com).

“It will be an interesting one. I think Khabib would probably beat him,” McGregor said. “Again, you’ve got to see what the circumstances are. Anyone can win on any given day. Tony is a formidable fighter also, you know. He’s very, very tough. He does go down, he does get dropped, his guard has been passed, he’s been mounted by a lesser fighter, so I would favor Khabib in that bout.”

McGregor then went on to detail what when wrong in his title fight against Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 last October and said his him and his team underestimated the champ but have made the necessary adjustments for a potential rematch down the line:

“We overestimated his grappling severely, and we also underestimated his striking, so there are things that we will correct,” McGregor said. “I will go on the offensive from a grappling standpoint. I believe I was winning the clinch exchanges in Round 3 in the bout, but it was a little too late. A little too little too late in the bout and also my lack of commitment, and I wasn’t as fully committed as I should be, carrying injuries and what not, so there’s many many things we can improve and sharpen up when the rematch happens.” Advertisement
