Conor McGregor’s Ex-Taekwondo Coach Asks for Forgiveness After Allegedly Killing Man
Johnny Dargan, who
once served as UFC featherweight champion Conor
McGregor’s taekwondo coach, is asking for forgiveness after
allegedly killing another man during an altercation in Ireland
earlier this month.
According to report in the Irish Independent, Dargan hit 57-year-old Paddy Mullally when Mullally attempted to intervene in an argument between Dargan and his girlfriend on March 5. After receiving the alleged blow, Mullally fell to the ground and struck his head. He died from his injuries the next day.
“I’m so sorry. It was an accident. I’m devastated and heartbroken
for that man and his family. All I can say is I’m crushed,” Dargan
said. “If I could take back everything that happened that night I
would, but all I can do is beg his family for their forgiveness. It
was a genuine mistake.”
Dargan and his girlfriend had reportedly attended an Adele concert earlier in the evening and had been drinking. The couple began to argue when Dargan insisted on driving, which attracted the attention of several passersby. Dargan reportedly cursed at one man and freed himself from another who attempted to drag him away before he hit Mullally.
Mullally was reportedly returning from his retirement party and stopped to have a drink at a nearby bar.
Dargan, who works as a doorman at a nightclub and teaches taekwondo to children, had little recollection of the incident, according to the report. He had no prior criminal record and was believed to be in a foul mood because Mother’s Day was the following day and he was asked about his mother, who was shot and killed two years ago in Dublin in an attack that also injured his sister.
Dargan went to work the following day before police found him and questioned him after his shift. Dargan reportedly broke down upon learning of Mullally’s death and confirmed to authorities that he was likely the man they were seeking. Dargan was released and his file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
McGregor, who is coming off a loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, has not commented on the situation.
