Dana White Offers Little Clarity on Future of UFC’s Flyweight Division

The demise of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s flyweight division appears to be imminent, as the promotion has begun cutting ties with some its 125-pound talent.

One of those to receive his walking papers over the past week was former Titan FC champion Jose Torres, who went 1-1 in the Octagon.

“The flyweight division is going. I did kind of call it. Sadly because I called it and was publicly talking about it first, I probably was first on the chopping block because of that,” Torres said in a video on Twitter. “It’s part of the sport, this stuff happens.”

In the meantime, the long-rumored bout between bantamweight king T.J. Dillashaw and flyweight champ Henry Cejudo became official for UFC 233 in Anaheim, Calif., on Jan. 26. However, it won’t be Cejudo moving up to challenge for bantamweight gold. Instead, Dillashaw will be moving down to 125 pounds in a bid to become a two-division champion.

In an interview on Fox Sports 1 following UFC Fight Night 139, Dana White was asked if the promotion was planning on dissolving the 125-pound weight class. The UFC president managed to sidestep the question without offering any real clarity on the future of the division.

“We’re working on some things with that division,” White said. “Dillashaw wants to win two belts. There’s five or six guys who have done it; he wants to do it.

“Cejudo is absolutely fine fighting at that weight instead of going to 135, so we made it.”
