Dinis Paiva vs. Kyle Driscoll

Round 1

Kicking off the last episode of Contender Series before the October break is a featherweight affair pitting “Sweetbread” Paiva (13-7, 0-0 DWCS) against American Kickboxing Academy product Driscoll (11-3, 0-0 DWCS). This will be Paiva’s first bout outside the CES promotion, having spent his entire career with the New England-based organization before now. Referee Mark Smith will keep tabs on this card opener, and with a touch of gloves, the fight is on. Driscoll walks forward with a jab as he pump-fakes a right leg kick, and Paiva catches a kick and cracks him with a right hand to send Driscoll tumbling to the canvas. Paiva allows him to return to his feet, so Driscoll thanks him with a slapping leg kick. Paiva slings a right hand and gets countered by a check left hook on the way in, but Paiva shakes it off and lands a leg kick. Paiva reaches with a few front kicks to the body, and the two men come together and start swinging. Driscoll strides forward to get off a knee, and he uses the momentum to try to take the fight down. Paiva gets rammed into the fence, and Driscoll nearly drags his legs out from beneath him. Paiva retains his footing thanks to a fence grab, and he gets away with another before separating. Driscoll tries to catch him with a knee up the middle on the break, but Paiva backs off in time. Driscoll resets and shoots in for a takedown, where he gets it and takes Paiva’s back when Paiva tries to scramble. The New England native manages to get back to his feet and shuck off the hook from his opponent, but Driscoll steps around to try to secure a standing back take. Paiva defends it but gets wrenched down to the canvas, where Driscoll lands a single right hand. Paiva wriggles to his feet for a moment, but Driscoll muscles him back down to a knee and climbs on to his back. When Driscoll gets his hook in, Paiva pulls it out and nearly steps out of the position, and he manages to free himself from the AKA fighter’s grasp. Paiva lands a leg kick, and Driscoll aims a high kick but clatters off his man’s guard. Paiva loads up on a right hand, but Driscoll evades the strike and partially connects with a counter. Driscoll pops him with a quick head kick, and another comes right after as Paiva looks flustered. Paiva flings forward a front kick that falls shy of his intended target, and Driscoll walks him down until the horn sounds.

Round 2

They touch gloves, and Driscoll opens up with a head kick that gets blocked. Driscoll walks forward with a left and a power right, and Paiva is able to swat it out of the way and return with a low kick that is checked. Both men land single strikes from a distance, but neither connect with anything of great effect. Paiva flips up a head kick that is easily defended, and a groin shot from Driscoll pauses the action. They get back to it and Driscoll cracks him with a right hand. Paiva wobbles but keeps his wits about him, as he tries to respond with a reaching left hand but is stifled with a takedown attempt. Paiva staves it off and backs away only to get clipped on the cup with another kick. The time does not pause this time, and instead Paiva walks it off and throws a body kick back at his adversary. Paiva sets up his jab a few times, but each time it misses the mark until Driscoll crashes forward for a takedown. The former CES fighter thwarts it without issue and paws out his jab again a few times. Driscoll reaches his fingers out and stabs Paiva in the eye, and we again get a short break. Paiva resumes and gets off a single leg kick, and Driscoll does not care and instead walks through it with a few punches and a high kick that lands with an audible thud to Paiva’s guard. Driscoll continues his success with a three-punch combination in which only the third strike lands, and Paiva shakes his head and gets kicked in the chest. Driscoll barely whiffs with a question mark kick as Paiva is content to throw single jabs sporadically. Driscoll again targets the head kick and extends the combination with a punch to the body, and Paiva returns fire with a single strike. Paiva reaches with a few jabs and ducks out of the way from superman punch. A head kick and a few punches over the top from Driscoll conclude the more tepid round.

Round 3

The final frame sees the two greet with a clap of hands, and Driscoll then takes a step back before flipping up a kick. Driscoll puts on the gas in the form of several more punches and another blocked head kick, and chases Paiva down with a jumping knee. Paiva sits down on a right hand to disrupt a combination, and the New Englander takes a big right hand on the top of his head to shake him up. He backs off and Driscoll rushes in for a takedown, but Paiva quickly reverses the position and pops back to his feet. Paiva sticks his opponent with a right hand and moves, but Driscoll follows him and scores with his own strikes. Paiva lunges in with a punch that clanks off the cup and both men are warned about groin strikes. Paiva sneaks a right hand over the top with a right hook, and he winds up and blasts Driscoll with a huge left hand to send the AKA product crashing to the ground. Paiva steps forward to do some damage and Driscoll is immediately on him with a takedown attempt. Paiva hits a speedy switch to flip Driscoll over, and “Sweetbread” winds up on top in half guard while raining down punches to the body. Driscoll gets him back to full guard and locks his foe down before throwing his legs up high to set up an armbar. Paiva defends it well and uses the opportunity to pass guard, where he hops over to side control briefly. Driscoll scrambles and returns Paiva to his guard, where he sets up another armbar that Paiva powers out of with punches. Paiva fearlessly steps back into the guard, and Driscoll sees an opportunity and sweeps Paiva, where he instantly takes Paiva’s back. Paiva rolls to try to get out of the precarious position, and he gets to his knees as he eats punches and falls back down to the ground. Driscoll hunts for another armbar and Paiva slithers out, and the two wildly scramble and fall over one another until the bell sounds.

Taneisha Tennant vs. Danyelle Wolf

Round 1

For the first time in Contender Series history, a women’s featherweight match will take place, as former amateur boxer Wolf (0-0, 0-0 DWCS) makes her MMA debut against Invicta FC Phoenix Series 3 bantamweight winner Tennant (3-0, 0-0 DWCS). Clocking in this 145-pound affair is referee Mark Smith, and the two strikers do not touch gloves before throwing down. Tennant walks her down and gets clipped with a right hand over the top. She backs off and Wolf races forward with four punches that hit nothing but air. Tennant kicks the leg, and she avoids a counter head kick. Tennant stomps the knee with a kick, and she kicks the lead leg and tags Tennant with an overhand left but is similarly hit from a counter. The two trade leg kicks, and Wolf charges in with a right hand that glances off the chin. Wolf drills her in the face with three punches and makes Tennant stumble backwards, and she trips but gets back to her feet. Wolf pours it on and gets kicked to the body to disrupt her punching salvo. Tennant goes to the knee a few more times to keep Wolf off of her, and reaches in with a left hand that does not connect. She kicks the leg and bounces a left hand over the top, and this triggers Wolf to go on the offensive with a few punches. Tennant backs away while defending most of the strikes, but Wolf keeps on her with some punch combinations and a low kick. Tennant gets tired of getting hit from a distance and she blitzes forward to initiate a clinch, but Wolf powers out and even sneaks in an elbow to force a separation. Wolf sits down on a right hand that clocks Tennant square on the nose, and she paws out a jab a few times after it to fluster her opponent. Tennant changes levels when Wolf reaches with an overhand left, but the former boxer is able to stuff it and punish her with a solid one-two. A few more punches from Wolf end the frame.

Round 2

Tennant opens with a low kick and then a body kick, and a few more leg kicks follow while Wolf tries to counter her with an overhand right. Tennant strides forward to pop her on the chops with a right hook, and she backs off to land another leg kick. Tennant gets Wolf backed up to the cage and gets off a few more leg kicks and a left hand, and Wolf pushes her away to get back to the center of the Octagon. Tennant punches her way in with a left hand before clinching up, and she bails on it when Wolf simply muscles her off. Tennant goes right back in to the clinch, and again Wolf is able to power out and make Tennant change her mind. Wolf scores a few punches, and Tennant kicks the body and slips. Wolf allows her to stand up, and the two clack legs at the same time. Tennant frames off as Wolf comes at her and pokes Wolf in the eye, and we get a break. The two start off with jabs, and Wolf is angered as she fires off a one-two. She gets kicked in the leg and reaches out with a front kick, but a body kick from that boxer that follows does land. Wolf gets a left hand in as Tennant tries to kick her in the lead leg, and the MMA newcomer barely misses a head kick. Tennant chops at the leg and kicks to the body while Wolf sticks out a left jab. Wolf flips up a head kick and gets kicked in the leg, so she gives Tennant one back. Wolf targets the lead leg again and Tennant charges at her, but the latter stumbles on the way in. Tennant leaves her leg out after she kicks a little too long, and Wolf lifts it in the air and sets Tennant down. The boxer does not capitalize on the grounded position, and instead lets her up so Tennant attacks. Tennant jabs the body with a front kick that makes Wolf double over, and “Triple Threat” gives it everything she has with a bombardment of punches on Wolf to the body and head. Wolf tries to defend and gets off a few strikes, but she is forced to cover up for the most part. Tennant bullies Wolf to the fence in the clinch as the round ends.

Round 3

Tennant kicks the leg a few times as Wolf lets go with her punches right out of the gate. Several looping punches score from Wolf, but she leaves her fingers out as Tennant fires back and takes a finger deep into the eye socket. Tennant lets out a screech of pain as Smith immediately halts the action, and Tennant’s first question to the doctor is “what is going to happen if I say I can’t see?” This is not an auspicious sign for the fight, as Tennant is clearly compromised as she reluctantly says she can continue the match. Smith is not convinced, and he takes a long look into Tennant’s rapidly swelling eye. When the fight resumes, Wolf jabs and swings heavy leather, so Tennant crashes forward to get a body lock. She presses the boxer against the fence, and with pure strength, Wolf is able to break the grip and push her off. Wolf kicks at the head on the break, but Tennant blocks it and ducks a few big hooks that whiz by her head. The come together with jabs at the same time, and Wolf clips Tennant with a right hand until Tennant clinches her up again. Smith warns Wolf to not grab at the eye from the other side, and she bounces off the fence to stay on her feet. Tennant goes for a trip, and hooks the leg. Wolf stays on her feet by grabbing the fence, and she jumps up to pull guard for a guillotine choke. Tennant’s neck is in a bad way as she is trapped tightly in the choke, but instead of surrendering, she punches the body a few times. Wolf keeps a vice-like grip on the neck while Tennant attempts to break the grip, and after some time passes, Wolf lets go to readjust while Tennant keeps punching the body. Tennant hops over to side control and is immediately in Von Preux position, but she elects to pull her head free and aim for a kimura. Wolf yanks her arm free and kicks Tennant off, but Tennant springs over the long legs of the former boxer to hop on top. Wolf wings a few upkicks while Tennant kicks the thighs as she gets sent back to her feet, and she steps over to swing down a few punches until the horn blares to end this close fight.

Korey Kuppe vs. Michael Lombardo

Round 1

Up next is a welterweight matchup between two fighters with unique nicknames in “The Womanizer” Kuppe (8-3, 0-0 DWCS) and “The Don” Lombardo (10-2, 0-1 DWCS). Referee Mark Smith wishes he had a nickname that cool as he oversees the fight, and there is no interest in touching gloves before getting down to business. Kuppe keeps a stance reminiscent of karate stylists like Lyoto Machida and Stephen Thompson, and he is the first to blitz forward with a kick. He kicks the body with his hands down, and Lombardo ducks down and rails him with an overhand right. Kuppe’s hands are by his waist as he kicks the body, and Lombardo nearly falls over as he attacks, allowing Kuppe to jump in with a knee and they clinch. Smith quickly calls for the two men to work as Lombardo turns him around and grinds him on the fence, and Kuppe signals to Smith to break them up to no avail. Lombardo nearly lifts him up and sets him down, and on a second attempt, he manages to scoop the taller man in the air and plant his back to the ground. Kuppe throws up a high guard to fish for a triangle choke, but Lombardo pays it no mind and blasts his man with some heavy ground-and-pound. The long legs for Kuppe allow him to maintain a rubber guard, where he puts his left leg up to set up a possible omoplata. Lombardo is locked in this position, so he picks Kuppe up with the intent to slam him down. When Lombardo does not do so, Kuppe looks confused and lets go, so Lombardo frees himself, pushes Kuppe back down and smashes him in the face with an elbow. Kuppe smiles at him and takes another heavy elbow as he tries to keep an offensive guard. Lombardo allows him to stand up, and Kuppe thanks him with a flying strike. Lombardo catches him at the end of a punch, and Kuppe taunts him with his hands to his waist as he hops up and down before landing a jumping knee. Lombardo presses in and considers a last-second takedown, so Kuppe snags the neck and latches on vicious power guillotine. The time expires before he can elicit a tap.

Round 2

Kuppe initiates the offense of the second stanza with a hook kick, and Lombardo presses in on him to stop these damaging kicks by clinching him up against the cage. Kuppe boxes the ears and threatens with a trip before Lombardo drags his leg out. Kuppe stays on his feet with a fence grab, and Lombardo tries again before taking Kuppe’s back. Lombardo bangs his knee on the thigh before aiming one to the calf, and Kuppe shrugs at him. Lombardo nearly kicks the leg out but the tall man stays upright, so Lombardo punches him in the face a few times for good measure. Both men show visible frustration as Smith encourages them to engage, and Kuppe throws a loud no-look elbow that clacks off Lombardo’s skull. Smith again recommends Lombardo to work as he has the back, so he lifts him up on request and puts Kuppe flat on his back. “The Don” wings an elbow from on top, and he sneaks in a few shorter elbows as Kuppe works his way back to the fence wall. Lombardo starts laying down punches to the body before slinging one to the head, and as Lombardo throws the punch to the head, Kuppe nearly kicks free. Lombardo re-secures top position to land a short punch on top, and Kuppe rolls his eyes to mock him. Lombardo lands a much heavier elbow, and Kuppe is not smiling anymore. Lombardo gets off a few more as Kuppe tries to implement his rubber guard again, but the horn sounds before anything comes of it.

Round 3

The two men jaw at one another between rounds, until Kuppe’s corner tells him to quiet down. Kuppe throws one kick until Lombardo comes at him, grabs the kick, and elevates him. Kuppe once more stays on his feet with a clear fence grab, and Smith warns him once more. Lombardo keeps the same back position that he controlled several minutes in the last round, and Kuppe manages to turn around but gets gently set down to the floor. Kuppe swings punches and elbows but his arms are too long to find the right angle as Lombardo stays high and tight. Lombardo swats at him with a few punches, and he continues to embrace the grind while Kuppe is stuck on his back with no way up. For the umpteenth time, Smith asks the two fighters to work, so Lombardo sits up and punches the taller man a few times. Lombardo postures up but Kuppe kicks him back to full guard, as Lombardo drops down sporadic ground and pound while Kuppe yells at him to fight. Kuppe throws a few punches from his back that do not faze Lombardo, although he rolls to his knees after a minute or two and stands up. Lombardo is clinging on to him like saran wrap, and he picks up and slams down Kuppe to get to side control. Kuppe returns him to full guard, where he starts attacking from his back with punches and a triangle choke attempt. The grind has been embraced. The fight ends with the two men actually wanting to fight one another, as they continue to jaw-jack until the commission and Smith separates them.

Collin Anglin vs. Muhammadjon Naimov

Round 1

Back to the featherweight division, Titan FC vet Naimov (5-0, 0-0 DWCS) will try to keep his spotless record intact against new Factory X recruit Anglin (7-1, 0-0 DWCS). Drawing the assignment is referee Mark Smith once again, and the two men touch gloves to start their match. Naimov begins with a jab and a leg kick that turns Anglin around. Naimov peppers out the jab again, and Anglin swing and misses with an overhand right. They come together and trade leather, and Naimov blocks it but gets kick heavy to the leg. He gives it back, and then sends a spinning back kick to Anglin’s midsection. Anglin returns in kind with his own leg kick, and Naimov returns fire to spin Anglin around. The American regains his composure and walks right into a spinning back fist, but he shrugs it off and presses into a clinch where he delivers knees to the body. When Anglin scores an elbow, Naimov powers out and nearly separates, but instead bestows upon his opponent a few knees to the midsection. A couple more knees from Naimov make the American back off, and Naimov chops at the lead leg with a kick. Anglin fakes with a jab and staggers Naimov with a right hand, but the fighter born in Tajikistan responds with a heavy right hand of his own. Anglin crashes forward to initiate another clinch, and he bullies “Hillman” to the fence and tries to suck the leg out to get him down. Anglin powers him down, and Naimov scrambles but gives up his back in the process. Anglin gets both hooks in and instantly attacks the neck with a rear-naked choke. Naimov defends it by locking down Anglin’s right wrist under his armpit, and he scoots his back to the fence where he bursts up and out. Naimov is fired up and cracks Anglin with an illegal knee as Anglin returns to his feet. Smith does not see it, and a few right hands from Naimov send Anglin bouncing off the cage wall. Anglin tries to fight out of it but Naimov this time wades forward for a clinch. Naimov shoots in low for a takedown, but Anglin easily rebuffs him and pushes the undefeated fighter to his back to take side control. Anglin attempts to isolate the right arm of his grounded opponent for a crucifix, but the round ends before anything comes of it.

Round 2

Naimov starts off firing with a salvo of punches that make Anglin have to retreat immediately. Anglin regains his composure and swings back with a few heavy punches before clinching up. The American set up the Thai clinch to get off a few knees to the chin, and Naimov squeezes him to the cage wall. Anglin shoves him away, and both men score left hands. Anglin jabs, and Naimov walks through it to get his own Thai clinch. Two knees from Naimov land on the chin, and the third is way low and cracks the cup to make Anglin yet out a pained yelp. Smith pauses the fight and whispers for Anglin to take all the time he needs. Anglin does not, and instead is ready to get back to fighting after a few seconds. The two men get back into the clinch, and Anglin knees him in the chin a few times. Naimov pushes out and swings heavy leather, steps to the side and chops the leg. Anglin backs away from a big overhand right and jabs, but Naimov crashes in to attack. Anglin knees him on the jaw, and the two men bite down on their gumshields and swing for the bleachers. Both land heavy strikes, and neither appear worse for wear as Anglin walks after Naimov. Anglin interrupts his opponent at the beginning of a combination with a jab, and Naimov assaults him with a pair of knees. Anglin grabs hold of him and tosses him to the canvas, where he takes Naimov’s back quickly. Although Anglin considers a choke, he elects to land some heavy punches until Naimov rolls around. Anglin gets his hooks in and pursues a rear-naked choke, but he abandons it for some more ground-and-pound. Naimov defends the choke, so Anglin circles around to secure full mount and rain down shots. Anglin lets loose a few more strikes and takes Naimov’s back one more time before the horn ends the second round.

Round 3

Naimov strides out of his corner to begin the round, and he stands flat in the center of the cage. Anglin jabs at him from a distance, and he avoids a pair of looping hooks. Anglin makes his way in at the end of a jab, and a series of punches and an uppercut make Naimov backpedal. Naimov fires back, and the two men trade combinations. Naimov swings with a leg kick that makes him turn around, and he winds up with a huge shot. Anglin avoids it and steps in to elbow Naimov on the chin. The strike did some damage, as Naimov is hurt and backs away, so Anglin pours it on. He lands a few more punches, and now Naimov is back swinging and hurts Anglin. Naimov takes a few more blistering punches that make his knees weak, and Anglin has him on the proverbial ropes as he connects with a bevy of punches and elbows. Naimov shoots in for a desperation takedown, and Anglin stuffs it and lets him stand back up, The two stand in front of one another, and Anglin elbows him right on the temple. Naimov’s knees are weak but still taking up, so Anglin comes in from downtown and hits an uppercut seen in the world of Mortal Kombat. Anglin dodges one that returns from his opponent, and he stays composed and picks at the unbeaten fighter. Naimov tries and fails on a takedown attempt again, and Anglin unloads on him on the feet until Smith asks Naimov to defend himself. Naiov’s hands are down and his nose is busted up, and Anglin is slamming him in the face with punch after punch. Anglin drags him down to the ground, where he takes Naimov’s back. The American wraps his arm around the chin but Naimov holds his other tight, and the fighter formerly out of Tajikistan not only defends it, but he reverses the position to get on top. In side control, Naimov smacks Anglin in the face with a stream of elbows, and Anglin ties his leg up but takes elbows to the side of the neck. He finally gets Naimov back to his guard, and the two trade a few more punches until the horn concludes this fun brawl. UFC President Dana White is on his feet applauding this one, which is usually a good sign for the winner – even better so when compared the fights earlier on the card.

Jordan Williams vs. Gregory Rodrigues

Round 1

The marquee matchup of this Contender Series event is a middleweight battle between Brazil’s Rodrigues (7-2, 0-0 UFC) and the returning Williams (8-3, 1 NC; 0-1, 1 NC DWCS). In three bouts with the Contender Series, Williams has yet to retain a win, with a victory over Tim Caron in 2018 wiped out when Williams failed a post-fight drug test for marijuana. Making sure this fight does not go up in smoke is referee Mark Smith like all the previous matches tonight, and the two men touch ‘em up to ring in the final fight of the night. Williams reaches forward with a jab, and he gets kicked in the gut to start things off. Williams ducks a right hand to come in, and the Brazilian knees him in the midsection and just barely misses with an overhand right. “Robocop” catches him with a right hand when the two come together to trade. Rodrigues lands an overhand right and a knee to the body, only to back away from a counter. Williams catches him with a short left hand, and Rodrigues clips him with a right hook and barely misses with a head kick. Rodrigues shoots in for a takedown attempt, but Williams stops him in his tracks and pushes him away. Rodrigues thanks him for that with a thudding right hand, and then another when Williams tries to charge him. Williams kicks to the body as he looks for a way in, and Rodrigues walks in and gets cracked with a huge left hand. Rodrigues is stunned but still in the game, and Williams unloads with a furious barrage of punches that rock the Brazilian again and again. Sensing the finish, Williams pours it on, knocking Rodrigues up in the air and sending him crashing down to the canvas barely conscious. Smith dives in to rescue the battered “Robocop,” and we get our first finish of the night in dramatic fashion. The three-time DWCS competitor screams for Dana White to give him a contract, and given that it was the only stoppage across these five fights, it could very well be around the corner.
