Daniel Cormier Says Alexander Gustafsson Doesn’t Deserve to Fight for 205-Pound Interim Title

UFC 226 is now available on Amazon Prime.

It seems the bad blood between current Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson continues.

Cormier met Gustafsson back in October 2015 at UFC 192 and the pair put on an epic five-round war similar to the fight the Swede gave Jon Jones two years earlier. Judges scored the fight closely, awarding Cormier the win via split decision.

Gustafsson made headlines recently when he said that he believed his next fight at light heavyweight should be for the interim title due to the fact Cormier is moving up (temporarily) to fight heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. Cormier and Miocic’s super fight is scheduled to take place this weekend at UFC 226 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 7.

That comment struck a nerve with Cormier, who said he doesn’t believe Gustafsson has earned the right to this title fight due to his inactivity inside the Octagon. Cormier, who has been trading barbs with “The Mauler” over social media for a number of months told reporters during the UFC 226 conference call that it would silly to award him the interim title shot (via MMANYTT.com):

“It would bother me because Alexander Gustafsson does not deserve to fight for an interim title. I fought for the belt just at the beginning of the year and went up to chase something so much bigger. So no, he doesn’t deserve an interim title. He fought last May against Glover Teixeira then he beat Jan Blachowicz before. It’s like that was two years ago, he’s fought twice in two years. You know that since Alexander and I fought in October 2015, I fought Anderson Silva, [Anthony] ‘Rumble’ Johnson, Jon Jones, and Volkan Oezdemir. And this dude has fought Jan Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira and that’s it. That’s two times in the last three years. Why would he be fighting for the title? That makes no sense.”
