Daniel Cormier Sends Message To Family, Coaches, Fans and Stipe Miocic

Daniel Cormier has a message for his family, coaches, fans and opponent after losing his heavyweight title to Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 last weekend, but that message does not include a retirement announcement.

On Saturday night in Anaheim, Cormier was comfortably ahead on the judges’ scorecards going into the fourth round before Miocic made some adjustments to his game plan. The former champ began to land effective body shots which changed the complexion of the fight, appearing to deplete Cormier’s stamina and helping set up the fight-ending sequence.

“DC” was interviewed in the Octagon immediately after the loss, and while his disappointment in the outcome was obvious, he did not deliver the retirement announcement that some may have expected, stating instead that he would talk to his wife and team and decide on his next steps.

On Monday, Cormier posted a heartfelt message on his Instagram account thanking everyone around him before congratulating Miocic on the win:

It’s been a couple of days and I can’t stress the disappointment, I am so sorry to all I have let down. To my wife and kids I am so sorry you guys had to experience that, I never wanted y’all to see that and the hurt you guys showed breaks my heart everytime I think about it. My coaches I am sorry, i appreciate the work and time you’ve spent with me. My fans, thank you guys for all the love and support you have guided me to all these amazing accomplishments. Stipe Miocic and his team, congratulations on a tremendous victory, you showed so much heart and grit, you are the definition of Cleveland tough. @danawhite And all at the @ufc thank you all for everything you have done for me and my family. Cormier had long stated his intention to retire from the sport by his 40th birthday in March, but those plan were postponed after he was forced to undergo back surgery, and the Miocic rematch was booked after the UFC was unable to come to terms with WWE star and former UFC champ Brock Lesnar for a fight with Cormier.
