Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis has revealed how he has transitioned from his early days as a fighter in the UFC.

“The Black Beast” admits he didn’t train much for his opponents and didn’t have the best diet in the past despite his success inside the Octagon. However, on Saturday night at UFC 226 in Las Vegas, Lewis is up against arguably his toughest opponent so far in his career when he goes toe-to-toe with the hardest hitting fighter in the UFC, Francis Ngannou.

While Lewis may have taken training lightly in the past, he told FloCombat that he’s made several adjustments in preparation for the fight with Ngannou, including spending additional time in the gym as well as changing his diet.

“Let’s just say I’ve been training a lot more than I have been. My past fights, I probably only trained 30 minutes a day. Now I’m training at least two or three hours a day now,” Lewis said. “I’m training more serious. I’m doing everything that I needed to be doing that a mixed martial artist is supposed to be doing. Like trying to eat right cause at first, I wasn’t eating right at all. I’m trying to eat right. I’m still slipping up here and there.

“Just working on everything not just my stand up. I’m working on everything, my wrestling, jiu-jitsu, conditioning, everything. I’m taking it more serious.”

While Lewis’ goal on the weekend is to beat the dangerous Ngannou, feels the manner of the win could dictate who his next opponent is.

“If I knock him out, it’s a title shot,” Lewis said. “If I win by decision, then I should fight Curtis Blaydes.”
