Devonte Smith on Facing New Opponents: 'Nothing Changes For Me'

By Cole Shelton Aug 15, 2019

Devonte Smith has had a roller coaster of a time in the lead up to UFC 241.

"King Kage" was originally set to fight John Makdessi, but the Canadian got hurt so Clay Collard stepped in. After that, Collard was removed from the fight due to health reasons, so Khama Worthy will now take on Smith on very short notice.

For Smith, although it is frustrating to go through so many opponent changes, it doesn't impact how he trains or prepares for the fight.

"It doesn't change anything in any shape or form," Smith said to Sherdog.com. "I just train and improve on my own skills for times like this. Nothing changes for me."

Although fighting someone making their Ultimate Fighting Championship debut is not ideal, as Smith wanted someone closer to the rankings, he knows he and Makdessi will still lock horns one day.

"Me and Makdessi will still get that work in. I'll win this fight and then we will fight later," he said.

Ultimately, "King Kage" is more than confident he will win this fight, and is hoping for yet another first round knockout. But, he isn’t focusing on that, and instead will just fight his game plan.
