Ex-Bellator Featherweight Champ Patricio Freire Released from PFL Contract

One of Professional Fighters League’s most vocal critics is now a free agent.

PFL chairman and founder Donn Davis announced via social media on Tuesday that Patricio Freire has been released from the promotion, and Sherdog.com subsequently confirmed the news with a promotion official. In recent months, Freire had been critical of both his contract and lack of activity since PFL purchased Bellator in late 2023.

“[The PFL] is all about opportunity,” Davis wrote. “I founded this company to create new great opportunities for top fighters. PFL has and will continue to do that for all top fighters who want to be here.”

One of the top featherweights in the world regardless of promotion, Freire’s exit comes on the heels of Davis’ announcement that the Bellator MMA brand is no more. The 37-year-old Brazilian was the reigning Bellator featherweight champ prior to his release — one of multiple title stints he enjoyed with the promotion. Freire competed just once after the PFL purchase, as he defeated Jeremy Kennedy via third-round TKO in a 145-pound title bout at Bellator Champions Series Belfast this past March.

“Pitbull” has compiled a 36-7 mark over the course of a career that began in 2004. Many of his most noteworthy moments came under the Bellator MMA banner, including victories over the likes of Daniel Straus (three times), Pat Curran, Daniel Weichel (twice), Michael Chandler and A.J. McKee, to name a few.
