Five Title Fights Official for German MMA Championship 3

All fighters made weight ahead of Germany’s mixed martial arts extravaganza German MMA Championship 3, which takes place at the Ruhrstadt Arena in Herne on Saturday night. Headliner Andreas Kraniotakes, who will challenge for the vacant GMC Heavyweight Championship tipped the scales at 232 pounds. His opponent, Bjoern Schmiedeberg, who holds a 2010 win over Kraniotakes, was mysteriously absent from the weigh-ins. No explanation was given by the promoter.

Tempers almost flared when flyweights Martin Buschkamp and Patrik Berisha had a very intense staredown. Sao Paulo born, Tuttlingen-raised jiu-jitsu whiz kid Buschkamp came in at a ripped 144 pounds. Switzerland’s Berisha swept aside all speculations he may come into the heated battle heavy when he came in at an allowed 145.5 pounds. The Albanian born all-rounder already holds the Kombat Komplett title and will be vying for his second gold in Germany tomorrow.

The story of the weigh-ins was Marcin Bandel, however. The Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu brown belt had taken the middleweight title fight against Andreas Birgels on less than 10 days’ notice and suffered an unparalleled loss when his father passed away on Wednesday. The 23-year-old submission specialist elected to go ahead with the fight nonetheless and weighed in at 183 pounds. Birgels was even one pound lighter at 182.

A few undercard fighters were also absent from the official weigh-ins due to workers at Düsseldorf airport being on strike.
