Undercard Results

Unbeaten welterweight contender Brad Solomon had a much tougher time than expected with Adrian Granados and had to settle for a split decision win after 10 rounds. Solomon, from Lafayette, La., used better ring generalship and landed the more telling blows throughout, but Granados, who fights out of Cicero, Ill., made Solomon work every minute of the fight. Solomon’s more effective punching was the key and he was awarded the split nod via tallies of 96-94 (twice) and 94-96 to improve to 25-0 with 9 KOs. Granados fell to 13-4 with 9 KOs.

Philadelphia’s Jesse Hart, a highly-touted super middleweight contender, dominated Chicago’s Mike Jimenez from the opening bell and eventually took him out. Hart was superb setting up his power shots behind the jab and effective body punching. Jimenez was game throughout and tried to brawl with Hart, but he was a step behind his opponent for the entire fight. After battering Jimenez repeatedly, referee Tony Weeks finally halted the action at 2:13 of the sixth frame. It was a great performance by Hart (17-0, 14 KOs), who retained his regional titles. Jimenez lost for the first time as a pro; he now stands at 17-1 with 11 KOs.

Unbeaten middleweight prospect Chris Pearson continued his ascent through the ranks with a ten round unanimous decision win over the tough Said El Harrak. Pearson suffered a nasty cut over his right eye midway through the fight, but his potent jab and better overall countering proved to be the deciding factor in the matchup. Pearson, from Dayton, OH, was awarded the win via tallies of 98-92 and 99-91 (twice) to improve to 12-0 with 9 KOs. El Harrak, from nearby Henderson, dipped to 12-3 with 7 KOs.

Considered the greatest amateur boxer of all-time, Vasyl Lomachenko looked sensational in dismantling Puerto Rico’s Gamalier Rodrigues in the opening bout of the Pay-Per-View event. Lomachenko retained his WBO featherweight title in grand fashion as he forced his challenger to stay down for the full count in the ninth; he was beaten that badly.

Lomachenko used his dizzying combos to the head and body – backed by his textbook southpaw jab – to keep Rodrigues guessing throughout their encounter. No matter what the Bayamon resident tried against the two-time Olympic gold medalist, nothing worked. Even when he landed some powerful shots on the Ukrainian and dug several shots to the groin, he never was able to slow down the champ.

Lomachenko poured on the offense in the seventh when he landed a scorching six-punch combo, forcing his foe to take a knee. Rodrigues returned to action, but the end was already written on the wall. Rodrigues was so flustered that he repeatedly hit Lomachenko low – he was docked multiple points in the contest – and eventually called it a day in the ninth.

Lomachenko cracked him with a crushing right hook to the body and then followed that up with a right to the head. A short flurry immediately followed and Rodrigues was down again, where he stayed throughout referee Robert Byrd’s count. The fight officially just 50 seconds into the stanza.

After compiling a staggering 395-1 record in the amateur ranks, Lomachenko improved to 4-1 as a pro with his second knockout. Rodrigues, for his efforts, fell to 25-3-3 with 17 KOs.

In his debut at featherweight, unbeaten rising star Leo Santa Cruz overwhelmed grossly over-matched opponent Jose Cayetano in the chief support bout of the evening. Santa Cruz swarmed the Tijuana native from the opening bell and delivered a plethora of powerful shots to the head and body. However, as dominant as he was, he was unable to put away Cayetano, whose chin was something to behold.

Santa Cruz did virtually whatever he wanted when he wanted, but his lack of raw punching power prevented any knockdowns – let alone a knockout – from occurring. Still, the Rosemean, CA resident won every minute of every round, easily winning a lopsided unanimous decision over ten rounds. The official scores were 100-90 from all three ringside judges, allowing Santa Cruz to rise to 30-0-1 with 17 KOs.

Cayetano (17-4, 8 KOs) was about as tough as they come, but he was in way over his head against the bigger, stronger junior featherweight champ. After the fight, rumblings immediately made their way through the MGM Grand garden Arena about a Santa Cruz showdown with featherweight titlist Abner Mares.
