Frankie Edgar Says It’s a Shame that UFC Hasn’t Signed Ben Askren

Ben Askren has been in the news recently after commenting that he’d like to fight Ultimate Fighting Championship legend Georges St. Pierre inside the Octagon when the UFC returns to Montreal in 2019.

Askren is arguably one of the best fighters to never sign with the UFC and held titles in Bellator MMA and One Championship.

Frankie Edgar recently talked with MMA Roasted about Askren and provided some insight as to why he never featured in the UFC’s plans. “The Answer” believes the grinding style of Askren does not appeal to UFC President Dana White who has openly berated fighters that are too focused on their wrestling base and don’t often finish their opponents.

“I would love to see Askren in the UFC. I think it’s a shame that he hasn’t been here. I think people, or at least Dana and the UFC brass don’t want to see him go out there and wrestle guys to death and whatnot, but he’s out there wrestling and finishing guys now. The dude doesn’t get hit and it’s pretty impressive. Yeah, that’s like the, ‘who would win out of GSP or him?’”

Edgar believes if Askren and GSP ever fought it would be Askren, not GSP, who would have the advantage in wrestling, something that GSP has relied heavily on in his fights.

“That’s something people have been talking about for a long time and he’s got the ability to make that fight very interesting because of his wrestling ability. Typically Georges is the guy with the wrestling ability, but I think Ben might have (the upper) hand in there.”
