Frankie Edgar Unsure Whether He’ll Drop to 135 pounds following Saturday’s Loss
Frankie Edgar has fought bigger men throughout his career and has largely been successful, but on Saturday night at UFC 240 he got a reality check at the hands of a younger, much larger fighter in Max Holloway.
Edgar fought valiantly through the five-round fight but ultimately couldn’t execute his game plan as he struggled to close the distance and was thwarted in his takedown attempts. At the conclusion of the fight Edgar said he was “heartbroken” to lose to Holloway, but acknowledged it wasn’t down to anything he didn’t do.
As a sign of how the times have changed, Edgar, a previous world champion at lightweight, is contemplating a move down to the 135-pound division where he would be fighting men of similar size. In a post-fight interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Edgar said he still isn’t sure if he’ll move down a division despite the one-sided nature of his fight against Holloway. “I was only a little guy growing up and it didn’t matter,” he said. “I want to show my kid [that size] doesn’t matter. But you get to high-level guys and it does sometimes. I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m going to do yet.”
