Headliners Kendall Grove, Jay Silva Cleared; Terry Martin Nixed from SCC 4
A headlining middleweight showdown between
UFC veterans Kendall
Grove and Jay Silva will
take place as planned at Superior
Cage Combat 4, as both main event participants hit their marks
at Wednesday’s weigh-in.
Grove tipped the scales at 185 pounds, while Silva came in one pound lighter at 184. Emanating from Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, SCC 4 will also feature a co-headlining lightweight title tilt pitting John Gunderson (154.5) against Justin Buchholz (155).
The winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 3, Grove, 29, has
posted back-to-back victories in the ProElite cage since departing
the UFC last year. “Da Spyder” debuted for ProElite in August,
submitting fellow UFC vet Joe Riggs with
a guillotine choke. Most recently, the lanky Hawaiian kicked off
2012 with a victory, outpointing Japanese fan favorite Ikuhisa
Minowa on Jan. 21 at ProElite 3.
Silva has fought with mixed results since his 2010 Octagon exit, falling by knockout to Bellator middleweight king Hector Lombard in just six seconds before rebounding with a pair of wins. Following his victories over Jamie Jara and Gemiyale Adkins, however, the Californian was outpointed by Bristol Marunde in his bid to capture the SCC middleweight title in November.
Another pair of former UFC talents were supposed to collide at Thursday’s event, but it was announced that Terry Martin was not medically cleared by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to compete against Jesse Taylor. The reason for the commission’s decision was not disclosed, but SCC officials revealed that Taylor has been paid both his show and win money.
The remaining competitors on the SCC 4 bill came in on point, with the exception of Dominique Robinson, who weighed in at 157 pounds for his lightweight scrap with Paulo Goncalves Silva (155). As a result, “Bananada” agreed to contest the bout at a catch-weight of 157 pounds.
SCC 4 Weigh-In Results:
Kendall Grove (185) vs. Jay Silva (184)
John Gunderson (154.5) vs. Justin Buchholz (155)
Danny Davis Jr. (170) vs. Jamie Yager (170)
Dominique Robinson(157) vs. Paulo Goncalves Silva (155)
Brandon Bender (145) vs. Marlin Weikel (144)
Walter Harris (255) vs. Anthony Hamilton (265)
Jimmy Jones (145) vs. Joao Victor (145)
