Jamie Varner Replaces Bobby Green, Faces Abel Trujillo at UFC 169

Jamie Varner will face fellow lightweight Abel Trujillo at UFC 169, promotion officials Tuesday announced.

The former World Extreme Cagefighting champion replaces Bobby Green, who has withdrawn from the event for undisclosed reasons. UFC 169 takes place Feb. 1 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and is headlined by a bantamweight title unification match pitting returning champion Dominick Cruz against interim titlist Renan Barao.

Varner was expected to return to the cage earlier this month at UFC on Fox 9, but an injury prevented him from competing. Green stepped up in his place and scored a unanimous decision over Pat Healy at the Dec. 14 event. “C-4” last competed on Aug. 31, when he dropped a split decision to Gleison Tibau at UFC 164.

Trujillo put forth arguably the best performance of his career at UFC on Fox 9, scoring a second-round stoppage over Roger Bowling in their rematch. The lightweights first met this past August, with the bout resulting in a controversial no-contest after Trujillo landed a knee to the head of a grounded Bowling.
