The 35-year-old Weidman has suffered four defeats in his last five fights at middleweight and made the decision to move up a weight class, where he’ll face the surging Dominick Reyes in his light heavyweight debut later this month when the UFC returns to Boston on Oct. 26.
Weidman’s claim that Jones hasn’t looked as good in his last few fights and that he would be the one to finally one to beat him has caught the attention of the champ, who laughed off the suggestion (via MMAMania.com):
“I’m just checking the news. Somebody tell Chris Weidman he don’t want to fight me,” Jones said on his latest Instagram post. “Stop. Hey Chris, just stop,” he concluded with a laugh. He also added a caption warning Weidman that staring at the target on his back could come back to “bite him in the ass.”
Jones currently doesn’t have an opponent after defending his title twice this year with a unanimous decision victory over Anthony Smith in March, followed by his split decision victory over Thiago Santos in July.
