Two talented Ultimate Fighting Championship strawweights will be vying for a spot on the rankings in September.
On Thursday, MMA Fighting reported that Mackenzie Dern (8-1) will be squaring off against Randa Markos (10-8-1) in the strawweight division at UFC 253. That event on Sept. 19 does not currently have an official location, although it will likely go down either at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas or on Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates. Dern announced her appearance on the event late Wednesday night.
Dern rebounded from her first career defeat – a decision loss to Amanda Ribas – with a first-round kneebar of Hannah Cifers in May. In doing so, Dern became the first female fighter to ever land a leg-based submission in UFC history. Throughout her brief career, the Brazilian posts a submission rate of 63 percent, while never needing to finish a fight with strikes.
The similarly submission-minded Markos has alternated wins and losses in each of her last four, and most recently also dropped a decision to the aforementioned Ribas. Like her opponent, “Quiet Storm” has never won by knockout, with all of her finishes coming by tapout within two rounds. Prior to her 2018 draw with Marina Rodriguez, Markos held the unlikely distinction of alternating wins and losses for 12 consecutive bouts.
UFC 253 may take place either at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas or on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on Sept. 19. Headlining the event for the time being is a lightweight championship unification match between champ Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim titleholder Justin Gaethje. No other bouts have yet been scheduled for the card.
