Marlon Moraes Scores Quick Finish of Raphael Assuncao in UFC Fight Night 144 Headliner

Nearly two years ago, Marlon Moraes lost a disputed split decision to Raphael Assuncao and he’s vowed vengeance ever since.

“Magic” stayed true to his promise as he throttled his fellow Brazilian in the main event of UFC Fight Night 144 by choking him out in the first round. After Moraes hurt Assuncao (27-6) with punches, the bantamweight fight was taken to the canvas. From there, Moraes (22-5) moved to full mount and locked in a guillotine.

Aldo Turns Back the Clock

It seems like there is some sand left in Jose Aldo’s hourglass.

The former two-time UFC featherweight champion looked terrific in dispatching of young lion Renato Carneiro (13-2-1) in the second round. “Scarface” took his time in the first by measuring his foe, but once he wobbled “Moicano” with a left hook to the jaw, he unloaded a dizzying barrage of punches to the head and body. Carneiro stumbled into the cage and Aldo (28-4) continued slamming punches into him until referee Jerin Valel had no choice but to intervene.

The end came just 44 seconds into the round.

Maia Quickly Taps Good

He may be 41 years-old, but Demian Maia is still one of the most dangerous grapplers on the planet. The Brazilian scored an early takedown of Lyman Good and made him work overtime to get back to his feet.

From there, Maia (26-9) pounced on the New Yorker’s back and patiently worked on a rear-naked choke. Good (20-5) eventually couldn’t free himself of the submission and tapped out, officially ending the welterweight matchup at 2:38 of the opening frame.

‘Do Bronx’ Extends Submission Record

After getting his eye gouged nearly out of his socket not once but twice in the first round, lightweight contender Charles Oliveira took David Teymur (8-2) out early in the second.

The wild opening round -- which saw referee Jerin Valel deduct a point from Teymur -- was the perfect precursor for the next, which ended in spectacular fashion. Oliveira (26-8) rocked the Swede with a sharp right elbow to the head and then unloaded a barrage of punches against the cage. From there, the Brazilian snatched Teymur’s neck, dragged him to the canvas and locked in an anaconda choke, ending just 55 ticks into the second.

Walker Puts On Blue Label Performance

Johnny Walker scored another explosive knockout and he did it as soon as his light heavyweight showdown with Justin Ledet began.

Walker (16-3) calmly walked out of his corner, landed a side kick to the body underneath a few jabs from Ledet (9-2) and then unfurled a wicked spinning backfist. “El Blanco” fell on his side and Walker nearly landed an illegal kick to the head. From there, the Brazillian unloaded a few punches that knocked the American out, prompting referee Eduardo Herdy to stop it. The end came in just 15 seconds.

Souza Edges Frota

In the opening bout of the main card, it was a tactical affair between Brazilian strawweights Livinha Souza and Sarah Frota. The duel was a pairing of grappler-versus-striker and the outcome came down to the wire.

Souza (13-1) scored multiple takedowns and nearly landed a rear-naked choke late in the second, but Frota wobbled her foe twice with punches. In the end, the judges favored Souza, allowing “The Brazilian Gangster” to win via split decision with scores of 29-28 (twice) and 28-29. Frota fell to 9-1.
