Matt Hughes Responds to Colby Covington’s Post-Fight Interview: ‘You Gotta Have Thick Skin’

During his rise to prominence in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Colby Covington has been known for his outlandish — and sometimes tasteless — remarks.
After Covington bested Robbie
Lawler via unanimous decision in the UFC on ESPN headliner on
Saturday, he directed his post-fight commentary toward one of his
opponent’s longtime Miletich Fighting Systems stablemates.
“Let’s talk about a lesson Robbie Lawler should have learned from Matt Hughes,” Covington said in the Octagon. “Get off the tracks when the train is coming.”
Hughes, a UFC Hall of Famer and former welterweight champion, was injured in June 2017 when his truck was hit by a train while crossing railroad tracks in Illinois. Hughes suffered a brain injury as a result but has by all accounts made an impressive recovery.
Hughes responded to Covington’s remarks in a post on Instagram on Saturday, and while the former champ acknowledged that the interview might have been in poor taste, he also praised “Chaos” for his performance in victory.
“Not sure if [Covington] should have [used] my accident as fuel for his post-fight trash talk, but that was one heck of a fight,” Hughes wrote. “Nice win for [American Top Team], and [Robbie Lawler] always puts on a good fight.
“Reminder though, this is the fighting world. People trash talk and you gotta have thick skin.”
Covington’s talk and resume may have earned him a title shot, as his seven-bout winning streak is currently the third-longest in the welterweight division.
