HALIFAX Mixed martial arts continues its steady expansion as Extreme Cage Combat is set to become the first Canadian MMA event to occur east of Quebec.
Sherdog.com sat down with two of the events three promoters, Peter Martell and Kevin Taylor, who said that this event was years in the planning. The pair, both Renzo Gracie (Pictures) trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belts, said that this is only the first of what they hope will be many MMA events to be held in Eastern Canada.
Were coming back to the Halifax Forum in July and November, and were hoping for Moncton and Cape Breton as well, Martell said.
This is a fighting province, Taylor added.
When asked about the format they plan to use, the promoters said that they will essentially be following North American Unified Rules three five-minute rounds, 10-point must rule, four-ounce gloves and a 24-foot-by-24-foot cage.
As a concession to the events sanctioning body, the Nova Scotia Boxing Authority, elbows to the head will not be allowed.
