One Championship Weigh-in Results: Luis Santos Misses Weight for Ben Askren Rematch

So much for the best-laid plans, as Luis Santos’ inability to make weight has put his rematch with One Championship welterweight titleholder Ben Askren in jeopardy.

A little less than seven months after an eye poke left their first encounter in a no-contest, Santos punched in at 172 pounds for his clash with Askren (169.5) in the One Championship “Pride of Lions” main event on Friday at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. According to One Championship officials, the fight is “under negotiation.” Undefeated strawweight champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke (114.5) and Yago Bryan Farias de Morais (116.5) both hit the intended marks for their non-title super fight at Thursday’s official weigh-in.

A four-time NCAA All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, where he won two national championships, Askren represented the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing before moving to MMA. While the 31-year-old former Bellator MMA champion has long been the target of criticism for his grinding, wrestling-centric style, he entered his first battle with Santos on the strength of four straight finishes.

A veteran of more than 70 professional bouts, Santos has not tasted defeat since May 2012. The 35-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has delivered 48 of his 61 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Wins over Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans Shamar Baily, Ivan Jorge and Ildemar Alcantara anchor the Santos resume.

One Championship “Pride of Lions” will be available on internet pay-per-view at ONEPPV.com.
