Petr Yan Explains Why He Accepted Marcus McGhee Matchup

Petr Yan is as game as they come.

Yan will fight Marcus McGhee at UFC Abu Dhabi on July 26 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. When reports of the matchup first surfaced, many were initially unwilling to buy it. Fans couldn’t fathom why Yan, likely on he brink of a title shot, would fight so far down the rankings.

However, Yan just wants to stay active. “No Mercy” revealed that the UFC promised him a title shot in his next fight if he wanted to wait for it. However, the former bantamweight champ wanted to fight in the summer and most fighters in the Top 10 weren’t available.

"I was told that I can wait, and I'll be next in line for the title,” Yan told Gorilla Energy. “But I don't want to wait, and I don't want to be an inactive fighter. I want to fight twice this year, if possible. I am ready to fight, I expressed my desire, they found me an opponent. All the fighters in the Top 5 or even Top 10 are busy right now. Some of them already have fights scheduled, some have other reasons. I just wanted to fight in July, they found me an opponent, and I'm ready."

McGhee is undefeated in four UFC outings with three finishes. He comes off a decision win over Jonathan Martinez at UFC 309 last November, the only time he saw the judges' scorecards in his career.

Meanwhile, Yan seemed to have faded slightly after losing his title as he dropped two more in a row. However, the Russian has since defeated Yadong Song and former flyweight champ Deiveson Figueiredo last year.
