Rampage, Evans Cleared for UFC 114

The countdown to real physical contact between two of the world’s premier light heavyweights has begun in earnest.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson tipped the scales at 205 pounds for his blockbuster main event against Rashad Evans (206) at UFC 114 “Rampage vs. Evans” on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The 20 other fighters booked to compete under the marquee matchup -- including co-headliners Michael Bisping (186) and Dan Miller (185) -- also met their mandated weight requirements without a glitch at Friday’s official weigh-in.

Jackson and Evans gave birth to one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries at UFC 96, when the two stood nose-to-nose and let the trash talk fly. They appeared as opposing coaches on Season 10 of “The Ultimate Fighter” and were originally scheduled to meet in December. However, Jackson’s decision to accept a prime role in the forthcoming “A-Team” movie forced a delay in their confrontation.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Jackson has won eight of his last nine fights but has not competed since he defeated Keith Jardine, Evans’ close friend and teammate, more than a year ago. The 31-year-old now trains out of the Wolfslair Academy in England. Victories over former two-division Pride Fighting Championships titleholder Dan Henderson, UFC hall of famer Chuck Liddell (twice) and Brazilian icon Wanderlei Silva anchor his resume.

Evans last competed in January, when he grinded out a unanimous decision against American Top Team’s Thiago Silva in January. Based at Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts in Albuquerque, N.M., the 30-year-old owns a stellar 9-1-1 mark inside the Octagon. Evans, who won Season 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, was a national wrestling champion at Niagara Community College and went on to wrestle at Michigan State University.
