Report: Colby Covington Was Advised To Pull Out Of UFC Newark Due To Cut

On Saturday, Colby Covington added a huge name to his résumé and cemented himself as the next challenger for the UFC welterweight title with a five-round domination of Robbie Lawler, but it turns out the fight almost didn’t happen at all.

Late Saturday night, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani revealed that “Chaos” was advised by doctors to pull out of the fight due to a head cut he sustained in training. Helwani posted a picture of Covington’s injury taken three weeks ago after he took an accidental head-butt in training which required 16 stitches.

“This photo is Colby Covington three weeks ago. An accidental headbutt in training opened a cut that required 16 stitches. He told me a doctor told him he should consider pulling out because of its proximity to his eye,” Helwani posted.

The injury didn’t seem to faze the former interim welterweight champion, who manhandled Lawler from start to finish and then promptly turned his attention to undisputed champ Kamaru Usman, a man with whom he has been sparring verbally for months.

Fans got a sneak peek of what to expect in the lead-up to the title fight later this year as Covington did his post-fight interview with the ESPN panel which included Usman and security had to intervene as both fighters started to trade barbs.
