Report: MMA Fighter Sergio Salcido Killed in Shooting

Two Americans were killed at the U.S.-Mexico border early Monday morning while waiting in line to enter California.

The men were identified as Kevin Joel Romero, 28, and Sergio Salcido (Pictured), 25, the latter of which was a professional mixed martial arts fighter and Gladiator Challenge veteran.

According to a report from the San Diego Union Tribune, the men were shot multiple times in the head, chest and arms by a suspect armed with a 9 mm pistol. The pair was reportedly sitting in their employer's truck while waiting at the San Ysdiro border crossing at approximately 2:40 a.m. A motive for the killings is not yet known.

According to the Union Tribune, the men both worked for the West Coast Beverage Company -- a company in San Diego that services draft beer equipment -- and were reportedly crossing the border to get to work. Both United States citizens, the men reportedly moved to Mexico to keep their expenses down, their employer, Matt Pelot, told the Union Tribune on Monday.

Salcido, a professional fighter since 2005, held a record of 4-5. Known as “Suave,” the welterweight began his career 4-1, but had lost four straight since July 2009. A Tachi Palace Fights veteran, Salcido reportedly moved from Bakersfield, Calif. to train in San Diego and was currently preparing for an upcoming fight in June.
