Roy Nelson and Stipe Miocic will lock horns in a heavyweight confrontation at UFC 161, promotion officials announced Tuesday.
The event will now be topped by a light heavyweight showdown pitting Dan Henderson against Rashad Evans. Nelson and Miocic will square off on the evening’s pay-per-view card, which follows the free preliminary card on FX and Facebook.
Nelson, 36, rides a three-fight winning streak heading into his conflict with Miocic, most recently knocking out Cheick Kongo with a series of punches last month at UFC 159. Prior to that triumph, “Big Country” closed out 2012 with a pair of stoppages, finishing Dave Herman one year ago before doing the same to Matt Mitrione on Dec. 15.
Miocic, meanwhile, returns to the cage for the first time since September, when he suffered his first professional defeat at the hands of lanky Dutchman Stefan Struve. Miocic, 30, joined the UFC in 2011, posting victories over Joey Beltran, Philip De Fries and Shane del Rosario before falling to “Skyscraper” at UFC on Fuel TV 5.
