Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Alfredo Angulo

Round 1

They circle in the center of the ring. Canelo lands a hard left uppercut right away. Canelo dishes out a few left jabs. Double left uppercut by Alvarez but they miss. Angulo is moving back and jabbing but he’s getting cracked by overhand rights. Nice stiff left jab by Canelo. Canelo is walking forward, pressing the issue. Hard, looping right hand by Canelo finds a home but Angulo shrugs it off. Anguilo looks awfully slow right now. Canelo is beating him to the punch easily. Hard right to the head, left hook to the body by Canelo. Hard, stiff left jab by Canelo stops Angulo in his tracks. Everything from Canelo has knockout written all over it, even his jabs. It seems like Angulo is stuck in slow-motion; Canelo is landing at will. Huge round for Alvarez.

Round 2

His corner was already icing Angulo’s right eye in between rounds. Angulo jabs to start the round but he looks tentative. Hard left jab again by Canelo. Beautiful right hand up top by Alvarez, who follows it up with a fierce left hook to the body. Angulo is three steps behind his foe and eating jabs. Angulo has no mustard on his shots whatsoever. Canelo digs a hard right to the body. Alvarez is very relaxed and in total control; he unfurls a right uppercut to the jaw. Another. Angulo is firing more, but there’s nothing on them. Another overhand right by Canelo finds a home. Canelo is punishing him with lefts and rights to the head and body. Cracking right hand to the jaw by Canelo near the bell. Angulo is in way over his head and it looks like he might be stopped within a few rounds.

Round 3

Angulo’s corner looks desperate between rounds, begging him to be more ferocious. Angulo slow to get out of his corner. Hard left hook by Canelo starts the assault. Nice left jab/left hook/right cross by Alvarez. Big left hook by Alvarez. Angulo is moving forward now, but his punches have no zing to them still; he’s pushing them out there. Canelo is on a mission to end this one early. Hard straight right by Canelo. Canelo is countering his foe whenever he wants. Canelo lands another hard left jab and then shoves him away. He is simply manhandling him. Beautiful four-punch combo to the head shakes Angulo. He’s wobbly and Canelo lands a right hand. Angulo is in trouble late in the third. A swollen mass has formed under Angulo’s right eye.

Round 4

A stiff left jab opens the round for Canelo. Angulo’s left eye is swollen already and starting to close. Nice three-punch combo to the head by Canelo. Alvarez fires a hard left hook to the ribs. Angulo is more assertive with his punches and pressure but he’s throwing weak punches. In a clinch, Angulo lands five meager right hands to the body. Hard right/left to the head by Canelo. Canelo dishes out a left hook and Angulo finally lands a solid right hand. Canelo simply returns a right of his own. Angulo is starting to pick up the steam but he walks into a four-punch combo late. Better round for “El Perro” but it’s still one-sided in favor of the Guadalajara native.

Round 5

Again a stiff left jab opens the round for Canelo. Jab-jab-jab; Angulo does nothing. Angulo is pressuring Canelo much more now but he’s still four steps behind and eating jabs. Angulo opens up with a flurry to the body and head, but most of his punches glance off. Nice right uppercut by Canelo followed by a right hand up top. Hard left hooks by Canelo as he backs away. Angulo’s eyes are both badly swollen. Canelo is backing away with his hands at his waist; Angulo still can’t get to him cleanly. Angulo’s best round by far but he still lost it pretty badly.

Round 6

Nice left jab by Canelo. Canelo is backed into the ropes, but he doubles up the left hook to create space. He stays there and Angulo buries his head in his chest but can’t get anything noteworthy off. Canelo lands a left hook again and escapes out to his left. Canelo isn’t as active in this round and his punches aren’t as hard as they were earlier. Still, he’s in control. Canelo cracks him with a right cross. Another. A left jab opens a cut on the outside of Angulo’s right eye. Left/right to the face by Canelo. Hard right/left hook and Angulo scowls at him, begging him to do it again. Angulo fires off a left/right, but misses badly. Right hand near the bell for Canelo.

Round 7

The ringside physician is called into the corner of Angulo to look him over. Referee Tony Weeks looks hard at Angulo to start the round; this might be his last. Angulo plugs away and pressures his opponent, but Canelo jabs away safely. Hard right/left to the head by Canelo. Angulo misses with a murderous right hook/uppercut. Angulo is much busier this round but whenever he gets into a groove, Canelo jabs away. Hard right to the head/left hook to the body by Canelo. Angulo backs Alvarez into the ropes but can’t land anything hard. Canelo escapes out to the left and jabs him. Decent three-punch combo by Canelo with a minute left. Hard left jab again by Canelo, followed by a right cross. Angulo has one heck of a chin as he eats clean punch after clean punch.

Round 8

Weeks asks Angulo how he is before the round starts. Angulo comes right at Canelo, but his punches are stuffed. Left jab by Canelo. Another. Two more. Angulo’s face is a swollen mess. Canelo fires a left jab but misses with a hard left hook. Angulo charges forth but misfires. He pins Canelo into the ropes and digs some hard shots to the body and head but Canelo reverses position and lands even harder punches to the head. Sizzling right hand; Angulo comes right at him. They have a brief exchange in the center of the ring. Hard right hand by Angulo! Another. Canelo has his back to the ropes and Angulo opens up. They trade blows and Angulo lands another hard right to the face. They separate and Canelo unloads a left/right to the face, but Angulo returns the favor. Near the bell, Angulo delivers a right to the head and Canelo clinches. Great action at the bell. Angulo’s best round by far.

Round 9

They go right at it at the bell. Angulo is full of energy and is riding his second wind. Left jab by Canelo. Angulo throws a three-punch combo to the face, only to eat a left in return. Canelo digs a left/right to the body followed by a left hook to the head. Angulo doubles over for a second and then regroups. Canelo is now backing Angulo up. Hard right to the head by Angulo but Canelo turned with it. Nice left to the body/left to the head by Canelo that snaps his foe’s head back. Hard right uppercut to the head by Canelo followed by an even harder left hook to the jaw. Angulo stumbles back and eats a right to the head. Still, he charges forward and throws punches but he eats a left at the bell.

Round 10

Once again the doctor is in the ring and speaking with Tony Weeks. They allow him to continue. Canelo’s face is finally start to show some wear and tear. Big left hook by Canelo. Angulo doubles up his jab. Angulo lands a straight right that snaps Canelo’s head back. Big left uppercut to the jaw blasts Angulo, who steps back into the ropes. Tony Weeks immediately jumps in and stops the fight. Angulo is furious and protesting the stoppage. The crowd is going berserk with the boos. Angulo is livid and in disbelief. The replays elicit violent boos from the crowd. Angulo is standing in his corner in stunned silence. He can’t believe Weeks stopped it. Most of the ringside media are puzzled at the stoppage as well. Canelo’s face is shown on the big screen and the vast majority of the crowd boos angrily. The official time is 47 seconds into the tenth round. The crowd is still going crazy with the anger. Police are sent ringside to encircle the ring. Angulo is still protesting the stoppage in his corner and arguing with Weeks, though it's civil.
