Strikeforce 'Destruction' Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com reports from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., with live play-by-play of Strikeforce “Destruction,” which features bouts with Scott Smith, Kim Couture Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Duane Ludwig.

Zak Bucia vs. Adam Steel
Round 1
Bucia scores a quick takedown on the heels of a striking exchange. He locks on a guillotine from the top and forces a tapout just 35 seconds in. Steel of San Jose loses in his pro debut.

Alvin Cacdac vs. Jose Palacios
Round 1
Palacios fights off takedowns while keep his striking distance. He reverses momentum and gets the takedown before moving to knee on belly. He stands back up, quickly catching a leg and sweeping Cacdac’s leg from under him. Straight right catches Palacios. Jab is finding its mark on the Cung Le trained-fighter. Cacdac remains persistent on the takedown after missed kick by Palacios but the Fremont-fighter defends until he secures top position. He works from side-mount and in guard with small blows to end the round. 10-9 Palacios.

Round 2
Cacdac aggressive with counters. Palacios throwing powerful leg kicks and sprawling. Suffering through elbows while trying to secure the takedown, Cacdac powers through and finds himself in a triangle. He finds his way out and the fighters battle to their feet. Palacos misfires on a Greco takedown and ends up on bottom. Cacdac pins him against the cage and forces him to scramble, taking his back and securing a rear-naked choke with no hooks for the win.

Brad Royster vs. Darren Uyenoyama
Round 1
Short leg kick by Royster starts. Uyenoyama responds and they begin the feeling out process. Uyenoyama tries a takedown and finds himself in a guillotione attempt. He escapes and scrambles, taking Royster’s back and punishing him with strikes to open up the rear naked choke. Uyenoyama gets a warning for striking to the back the head from referee Herb Dean. The fights are back in the standing position and Royster’s aggression finds him mounted. Uyenoyama works for a topside guillotione, rolls into guard and Royster pops his head out during the switch. Uyenoyama finds himself working from his back, avoiding ground and pound with rubber guard and upkicks to finish the round. 10-9 Uyenoyama.

Round 2
Uyenoyama gets takedown to open round. He struggles to find offense from inside the guard while setting up a pass into half-guard then full mount. Royster gives up his back and starts to take blows again. Uyenoyama rides him high before getting better position and moving back into full mount. Royster creates space but can’t win the position battle. With Uyenoyama standing over him, Royster misses an upkick that finds him scrambling and on the losing end of full mount again. Uyenoyama reigns down blows and omplattass. Royster has a graceful escape and ends the round standing over Uyenoyama. 10-9 Uyenoyama.

Round 3
Leg kick by Uyenoyama ends timid opening. Royster tries flying knee then lands a low leg kick after resetting. Royster working combinations, finishing with leg kicks. Uyenoyama avoiding most damage and scores a late takedown, finding full mount. Strikes bloodied up Royster profusely, who was battered to the end. 10-9 Uyenoyama. The official judges see the bout 30-27 for Uyenoyama.

Nik Theotikos vs. Luke Rockhold
Round 1
Theotikos quickly pulls guard with a guillotine. The choke is free of an inside arm and deep, but Rockhold pulls his head free and begins to work punches to the head from his opponent’s guard. Rockhold moves to Theotikos’ back after a scramble, where he applies a body-triangle. He sinks his arm under the chin of Theotikos and forces a tapout at 3:06 of the opening round.

Joe Riggs vs. Luke Stewart
Round 1
“Big” John McCarthy is the referee. Stewart clinches and trips Riggs to the canvas. Riggs gets to his feet and fights off a single-leg attempt from Stewart. Riggs takes a knee to the midsection and answers with a hard right hand. Stewart drops levels for another single and he gets it. Riggs locks on a guillotine, but Stewart shakes it off. Stewart passes guard and moves to the north-south position and then side-control. Riggs gets to half-guard and briefly the mount.

Round 2
Stewart goes back to the clinch and gets taken down by Riggs. From the top position in guard, Riggs lands a right hand. Riggs opens up and starts to tee off with punches. Stewart rolls over to avoid punishment and is blasted by a series of lefts and a hard right hand. “Big” John steps in to save Stewart at 2:05 of the second.

Kim Couture vs. Lina Kvokov
Round 1
Couture jumps all over Kvokov at the bell with wild punches and knees. Kvokov is taking a beating against the cage but she shows heart. Couture pushes her opponent out of the clinch and commences to throw haymakers. Kvokov, while standing, turns her back as she continues to eat leather. Referee Jon Schorle steps in to halt the bout at the 1:44 mark of round one.

Yves Edwards vs. Duane Ludwig
Round 1
Edwards sets up a shot with a right hand and gets a takedown. From half-guard, Edwards looks to pass. He gets to side-control briefly before being put back in half-guard. The pace slows to a crawl as Ludwig gets butterfly guard. Edwards fends off a triangle attempt and lands a left and a right to the head. The crowd showers the cage with boos as time expires with little action.

Round 2
Strikes fly as round two starts. Edwards throws a flurry of punches and a flying knee, but nothing lands clean. Edwards gets a single-leg but he can not hold Ludwig down. Ludwig lands a clean knee to the body that makes Edwards wince. Hurt from the strike, Edwards slows his pace and gets a single-leg. Edwards passes to half-guard, but does little with the position. Ludwig stands and takes Edwards down. Edwards gets to his feet and trips Ludwig to the floor. Ludwig closes his guard and stalls, asking referee Josh Rosenthal to stand the fighters. Ludwig stays patient and finally gets to his feet. The fighters trade knees to the body from the clinch in the final 15 seconds of the round.

Round 3
Ludwig goes to Edwards’ body with a kick and a left hand. Edwards fires back with a left-legged kick to the ribs. Edwards drops levels for a takedown, but showing good defense, Ludwig stuffs it as muscles Edwards to his back. Ludwig works from the top in guard with short punches and elbows. “Bang” switches it up and throws left elbows to the liver and head. Ludwig gets his right hand involved as five punches glance the head of Edwards. Yves stands and goes to the clinch along the fencing. Edwards gets a high-single before the horn sounds.

All three official judges see the contest 29-28 for Duane Ludwig.

Bobby Southworth vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral
Round 1
Sobral exchanges a brief flurry of punches before dropping for a takedown. Southworth blocks the attempt and trips the Brazilian to the canvas. Southworth passes to side-control; which gives Sobral the opening he needed to stand. With the crowd booing already, the fighters clinch along the fence. Sobral knees the right thigh of the champion. Southworth complains of a low blow, but referee “Big” John McCarthy has none of it. McCarthy separates the fighters after they stall against the cage. Southworth lands a knee to the body and eats a standing elbow that opens up a large cut above the right eye. The cut is severe, but action is resumed. Southworth gets a takedown before the round ends.

Between rounds, the fight is wisely stopped due to the laceration. The cut is long, deep and jagged. “Babalu” takes the win via TKO.

Scott Smith vs. Terry Martin
Round 1
Smith paws out a jab to keep Martin at a favorable range. Martin cuts the cage off and steps forward to throw. A counter right hand by Smith knocks him out face first. The official time is just 0:24 of the first. Referee Herb Dean did not need to step in, as Smith knew the contest was over on impact.

Lemont Davis vs. Brian Schwartz
Round 1
Davis charges forward after initial strike exchange and Schwartz, a huge local favorite, backing away off his jab. Clinched against the cage, he fights off a takedown attempt. Big hit sends Schwartz to the ground after his confidence boosts with a stiff shot of his own. Davis lets him stand back up. Clinched back against the cage, Davis controls but is taking the only shots offered. The two enter the center and Schwartz lands with a side kick to the body. 10-9 for Davis.

Round 2
Schwartz controlling stand-up in center of Octagon. Davis clinches up and Schwartz starts landing against the cage. He hits Davis in the back of the had, losing a point at the hands of referee Herb Dean. Davis responds angrily with strikes, forcing Schwartz against the cage. After more stand-up, Schwartz lands a big punch that puts Davis down. A foul occurred during the flurry, where a kick hit the downed opponent. The ringside physican consults Davis. Schwartz is the aggressor again to end the round. 9-9 round.

Round 3
Fighters exchange one-handed-handshake-hug in center of cage to start round. Schwartz hurts Davis immediately and Davis backs into the cage, where he initates a clinch. They separate and Schwartz begins landing again. Body punches wear down Davis. Schwartz hits with a big counter right that knocks out Davis at 2:22 of the third.

Kurt Osiander vs. Josh Neal
Round 1
Osiander throws leg kick, shoots, stuffed, under fire by Neal. The two exchange all around the cage before clinching, where Osiander gets the leg trip takedown. Neal fights his way up, He battles off the fence and throws a superman punch. Osiander connects standing and follows him to the ground, finishing off the stunned fighter. It was a left-right combo that finished the fight at 2:16 of the first by way of McCarthy's stoppage.

Tony Johnson vs. Eric Lawson
Round 1
Lawson counters a kick and powers through a takedown. He can’t score it, taking the center of the cage, he knocks down Johnson with a burtual punch. He attempts to finish, but Johnson scrambles to his feet dazed. He gives up a rear-naked choke. Lawson falls back with no hooks in, forcing Johnson to tap.

Bobby Stack vs. Cyrillo Padilha
Round 1
Stack is aggressive, and lands a right hook that resonates in the crowd and quickly clinches up. Stack gets takedown and starts ground and pound before allowing Padilha to stand up. They exchange leg kicks. The right hand connects again, sending Padilha reeling, and suffering through ground and pound. Stack allows him to stand again after the action stalls. The process repeats again. 10-8 for Stack.

Round 2
They exchange, both connecting, Padilha tries a takedown and ends up on bottom. Stack walks him over to the cage slowly. Stack slips punches and defends a takedown when they return to their feet. Padilha gets the takedown and stays inside guard until the round ends. 10-9 for Padilha

Round 3
Quick exchanges and Stack gets the better of it using angles and head movement. He tries a takedown and gets his back taken before ending up on top again. Back to their feet, Stack eats a punch and falls back to the cage, initiating a clinch. He lands two shots on the inside and fights off the takedown to end the round. Padilha 10-9.

The official judges see the contest 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Stack.
