Strikeforce Live Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com reports from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., with live play-by-play of Strikeforce “Carano vs. Cyborg.” Three MMA championship titles will be up for grabs.

Isaiah Hill vs. Alexander Trevino
Isaiah Hill vs. Alexander Trevino
Round 1
Hill lands a nice leg kick to open the match. Hill takes the fight to the mat and takes top position. Trevino with a nice sweep from half-guard right into mount. Hill sweeps back to top and mounts. Trevino defends well and works to escape. The fighters scramble and Trevino takes top position where he secures a keylock that forces Hill to tap at 3:56 of the first round.



Zak Bucia vs. James Terry
Round 1
Terry cracks Bucia with a straight right as the fighters move to the center of the cage. Terry lands a right high kick that flattens Bucia. He follows with punches until referee "Big" John McCarthy deems he has had enough. The stopage comes at 1:23 of the opening period.

David Douglas vs. Justin Wilcox

Wilcox pounded on Douglas.
Douglas charges out with a huge overhand right. Wilcox ducks under it and locks up. Douglas shrugs him off and lands a straight right-right uppercut that sits Wilcox down. Douglas tries to finish but Wilcox escapes back to his feet. Wilcox hits a double-leg takedown, but Douglas easily works his guard before standing back up. Wilcox hits another double and gets side control. Wilcox mounts but Douglas keeps him close to limit his striking ability. With 1:15 left, Wilcox finally opens up a bit in the guard, landing punches and a couple elbows. Douglas pulls him back in close to stop his offense. Douglas gets back to half but Wilcox shifts to side control before the horn sounds. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Wilcox.

Round 2
Wilcox takes the fight back to the mat as round two gets underway. Wilcox moves to side and then to mount. Douglas is fully defensive now. Wilcox not doing much damage but dominantly controlling position. The round ends with Wilcox still in mount. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Wilcox.

Round 3
Wilcox shoots back in and mounts. Douglas gives his back and gets flattened out. He turns back in and eats a pair of punches. Douglas is bleeding profusely from the nose. Wilcox takes Douglas' back as he tries to stand and slips his arm under his chin. He locks up a rear-naked choke with one hook in, and elicits the tapout at 3:16 of the third round.

Mike Cook vs. Scott Lighty
Round 1
Lighty lands a nice combination to get the scoring started, a right straight-left cross two piece. Lighty moving around the outside picking his shots. It is all Lighty now. He hurts Cook with high kick before crushing him with a straight right that collapses Cook to the canvas. He struggles back to his feet only to absorb a brutal left leg kick to the body followed by a digging left hand that left Cook waving for McCarthy to intervene. Lighty lands a couple more shots before the referee can get there to end the assault at 2:05 of the first stanza.

Jay Hieron vs. Jesse Taylor
Round 1
Taylor shoots and Hieron sprawls, then shrugs him off. Taylor shoots again and Hieron sprawls, pushing Taylor to his back. Hieron passes to half guard quickly, but Taylor keeps him at bay. Hieron begins to work elbows, and Taylor is bleeding from his nose. Taylor tries to wiggle to his feet, but Hieron pulls him back to the canvas. Referee Herb Dean re-starts them standing with 20 seconds on the clock. Taylor lunges forward, but doesn't land. Hieron 10-9.

Hieron outpointed Taylor.
Round 2
Taylor shoots again, but Hieron has his number, and briefly locks in a guillotine as they spill to the mat. Hieron has mount, then moves to Taylor's back where he almost locks up the rear-naked choke. Hieron moves back to mount and goes for a head-arm choke, but Taylor escapes. Hieron settles in Taylor's guard and the action lulls. Re-stood, Taylor looks desperate, swinging, then shooting for takedowns Hieron sees a mile away. Hieron again wrangles Taylor to the ground into half guard. The pair is re-stood again, and Taylor misses another punch-shoot combo. Hieron 10-9.

Round 3
The pair stand off for the first time in the bout. Taylor swings more, but neither land anything substantial. Taylor drops levels, but Hieron is right there and they resume center canvas. Again, Taylor shoots and delivers his first successful takedown. Taylor is in Hieron's butterfly guard, then passes to half, but there is little action and the crowd is growing restless. Hieron escapes to his feet and fends off Taylor with two beautiful sprawls. Hieron takes Taylor down. With one minute left, the pair is re-stood. An exhausted Taylor swings and kicks, but he's out of gas and Hieron is playing a patient game onto victory. Hieron 10-9.

All three official judges see the bout 30-27 for Hieron, who takes the unanimous decision.

Werdum submitted Kyle.
Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Kyle
Round 1
The fighters go straight to a punching exchange. Kyle gets the best of the trade. Kyle catches a low kick and bullies his foe to the cage. Werdum shoots and gets a single-leg takedown. Kyle goes for an armbar and Werdum passes to side control. Kyle attempts to stand is caught in a one-arm guillotine. Werdum closes his guard and the tap comes shortly after. The official time is 1:24 of the first.



Strikeforce Lightweight Championship
Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida
Round 1
Ishida attacks first with an inside-low kick. Ishida, a southpaw, sneaks in a left-hand lead. The fighters circle and the San Jose crowd lets both fighters hear it. Ishida responds by shooting and Melendez easily defends. Melendez cracks his opponent with a left hook. He lands another as he opens up his hands in a flurry. Ishida steps forward in the pocket and is cracked with a counter-left hook. The crowd grows restless once again. Ishida shoots a single and drags Melendez down against the fencing. Melendez stands and grabs the fence. Referee Herb Dean issues a warning for the foul. Melendez turns on Ishida and gets a takedown of his own. Ishida gets to his knees and Melendez smartly knees his right shin.

Melendez got revenge on Ishida.
Round 2
Melendez gets a right straight in as Ishida drops levels. Melendez paws out the ugliest jab in MMA but it’s effective. Ishida’s is busted up near the headline and is bleeding down his right side. Melendez traps his opponent against the fence and gets a takedown. Melendez punishes the body with knees before standing and connecting with his hands as well. A wild flurry of punches commences against the fence and Melendez clearly takes battle.

Round 3
Melendez connects with a right-hook lead. Ishida steps forward and grazes Melendez’s face with both hands. Melendez lands a right hand and stuffs a takedown. Melendez scrambles and knees the body. Ishida is hurt, he drops to his back and Melendez pounces. Melendez pounds away from the top and Ishida rolls over. Melendez looks for the rear-naked choke, but Ishida defends well. Melendez rains in punches from the top and Ishida covers up. The punishment mounts and referee Herb Dean steps in to save Ishida at the 3:56 mark of round three.

Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship
Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi
Round 1
Mousasi loads up on a kick to the body and it is caught by Sobral. Mousasi trips Sobral to the canvas and starts to strike from side control. Sobral is trapped against the fence and Mousasi unloads. Rights after lefts rain down and “Babalu” is out cold. Referee “Big” John McCarthy steps in at 1:00 of the opening frame.

Strikeforce Female 145-Pound Championship
Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos
Round 1
Cyborg attacks with a flurry and she’s roughing Carano up. Cyborg attempts to suplex Carano, but ends up on the bottom. Cyborg goes for a heel hook. Carano stays patient and escapes. The women stand and Cyborg again ends up on the bottom after trying to toss her opponent. Carano takes the mount and pounds away as the crowd goes crazy. Cyborg gets to half guard and Carano stands. Cyborg follows and again beats Carano up against the fence with both hands. Carano is covering up, but she’s hanging in there. Carano is tired. Cyborg throws Carano down and Cyborg lets her back up. The Brazilian jabs the head and gets in a right hook. With 75 seconds remaining, the fighters clinch and Cyborg walks her prey to the cage. Cyborg trips Carano to the canvas and begins to work from half guard. Cyborg goes for a keylock and Carano escapes. Cyborg stands in the guard of Carano and unloads. Cyborg throws a knee on Carano to stabalize her position. Right hand after right hand connect, and with one second remaining, referee Josh Rosenthal steps in to halt the contest.
