Takedown Entertainment Enters MMA Broadcast Ring

A new player has emerged in the field of mixed martial arts media distribution.

Sherdog.com learned on Friday from a source close to the situation that publicly traded company Takedown Entertainment has plans to shoot and broadcast shows from small promotions all over the world, disseminating the content live to fans via the Internet and, eventually, television.

Takedown plans to eventually air live events on an approximate weekly basis -- a la ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” -- partnering with dozens of local promotions around the world. The company has already signed on with Extreme Fighting Challenge, Sportfight and Alaska Fighting Championship, among others. Sherdog.com’s source said that if all goes to plan, more than 40 such promotions will have shows broadcast by Takedown Entertainment.

According to the source, the organization will stream events from both domestic and international promotions in high definition, emphasizing quality production value with the use of top-notch graphics and commentary. Streams should be initially free, though, in the future, Takedown may go to pay-per-view or subscription-based broadcasts.

The company will stream five to six live events to close out 2011 and plans to broadcast 40 events annually starting in 2012. While Takedown is currently searching for a television broadcast partner, the organization is apparently comfortable using the Internet as its primary distribution medium for now. However, 2012 could see events broadcast simultaneously on the Internet and television, with the intent of eventually reaching “hundreds of millions of homes.”

According to Takedown Entertainment’s website, notable coaches Matt Hume and Matt Lindland have signed on with the organization in an advisory capacity. An official announcement outlining the company’s upcoming plans is expected next week.
