World Series of Fighting has done some reshuffling of its light heavyweight tournament.
Thiago Silva will meet Matt Hamill in the new WSOF 19 co-main event on March 28, while Silva’s original opponent, Ronny Markes, will receive a new opponent at a later date. Silva, Hamill and Markes still comprise three-fourths of the promotion’s 205-pound title tourney bracket.
Hamill was expected to face Vinny Magalhaes in the WSOF 20 headliner, but Magalhaes has been removed from the tournament.
Sherdog.com confirmed the news with a WSOF official on Wednesday following an initial report from MMAFighting.com. Magalhaes today took to Twitter to dispute the portion of the report that stated he was having issues with his WSOF contract because of a prior agreement with Titan Fighting Championship. The 30-year-old Brazilian became Titan FC’s light heavyweight champion in September with a submission of Jason Brilz.
“I’m not under contract with any company but WSOF,” Magalhaes wrote. “I’m not fighting in April, but I’ll be fighting on a later event.”
Silva defeated Hamill in his final UFC appearance, taking a unanimous decision over the Ohio native at UFC Fight Night “Maia vs. Shields” in October 2013. Silva’s contract with the promotion was terminated last year.
Hamill, meanwhile, has not competed since his loss to Silva. He announced his retirement in July -- the second time he has done so in a three-year span -- before electing to sign with WSOF after a brief hiatus.
WSOF 19 takes place Comerica Theatre in Phoenix and is headlined by a lightweight title showdown between reigning champion Justin Gaethje and Luis Palomino.
