Thomson-Healy, Le-Smith Rematch Added to June 26 Strikeforce

Former divisional champion Josh Thomson will meet Pat Healy in a featured lightweight bout at Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Werdum” on June 26 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., the promotion announced Wednesday.

Also made official was a rematch between Scott Smith and former middleweight champion Cung Le.

American Kickboxing Academy’s Thomson and Strikeforce lightweight champion Gil Melendez waged one of the most well-regarded fights of 2009. After five rounds of back-and-forth trading, Melendez was given the unanimous nod and unified the promotion’s two 155-pound titles. The 31-year-old Thomson bested Melendez with unanimous scores back in June 2008 to take the crown from him.

Healy emerged victorious from his 155-pound bout against Bryan Travers at Strikeforce Challengers 8 on May 21 in Portland, Ore. With nearly 40 fights on his docket, Healy has also fought for the UFC and WEC and has won five of his last seven outings.

Le-Smith 1 was one of the promotion’s more memorable bouts in 2009. The 38-year-old Le battered Smith’s face and body with punches and kicks for nearly three rounds at Strikeforce “Evolution” last December in San Jose, Calif. However, the resilient Smith knocked Le down and finished him in the third round’s final minutes.

The June 26 event will also feature the return of the world’s No. 1 heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, who takes on former UFC top-fiver Fabricio Werdum in the headlining bout. Strikeforce 145-pound women’s champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will also defend her crown against Jan Finney.

Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Werdum” airs live on Showtime.
